Basilica Of Sant'Ubaldo, Gubbio
The Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo is a Roman Catholic church atop Mount Ingino, outside central Gubbio in Umbria, Italy. The church houses the body of the patron saint of Gubbio, Saint Ubaldo (the 12th-century Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini), kept atop the main altar on a marble plinth, surmounted by a glass case. History The church and adjacent convent was originally built in the first decade of the 1500s by Canons Regular of the Lateran. Once rich in stucco decoration from the Baroque era, much of this decoration was destroyed during bombing during the second world war, and the interior was reconstructed. The church is accessible through a long, winding trail from the city or a more adventurous chair-lift ride. History Settled in 1849, the town of Jessup was named after Judge William Jessup. It was presented to the Luzerne County Court for incorporation as the Borough of Winton in December 1876. Two years later, Lackawanna County was incorporated. The early 1890s were very significant for the little town, as numerous new mining operations were opened. Mount Ingino Christmas Tree
The Mount Ingino Christmas Tree is a lighting illumination in the shape of a Christmas tree that is installed annually on the slopes of Mount Ingino (''Monte Ingino'' in Italian) outside the city of Gubbio, in the Umbria region in Italy. The tree is also called the Gubbio Christmas Tree or ''the biggest Christmas tree in the world''. In 1991 the Guinness Book of Records named it "The World's Largest Christmas Tree". History The tree is high and 350 m wide at its base and consists of 3000 multi-colored lights and 8.5 kilometres of electrical cable, placed all the way up the slopes of Monte Ingino, which towers above the city. The illumination can be seen up to 50 kilometres (30 miles) away. Tommaso Maria Conca (1734–1822), was an Italian painter and draftsman, active mostly in Rome. Biography Tommaso Conca was born in Gaeta, one of the youngest of some eleven siblings, to Giovanni Conca and Anna Laura Scarsella di Castro. His father was a painter and cousin to the more famous painter Sebastiano Conca; the two were Tommaso's first teachers in Baroque painting. In 1770, Tommaso was made member of Accademia di San Luca, Rome's guild of painters. From 1775 to 1782 he worked for Marcantonio Borghese, painting the ceilings of two rooms in the renovated Galleria Borghese, in collaboration with Giovanni Battista Marchetti. Francesco Allegrini da Gubbio (1587–1663) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. His children, Flaminio and Angelica Allegrini, were also painters. Angelica painted a canvas for the church of San Francesco, Gubbio. Biography Born in Gubbio, he was also called ''Francesco da Gubbio''. Camilla Filicchi (1771-1848) was an Italian woman painter, active in her native Gubbio. Biography She had initial training in Gubbio with Giuseppe Reposati, but later with Annibale Beni. She painted a number of oil canvases for churches in the city, including an ''Ecstasy of St Francis'' for the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo; and ''Annunciation'' for the church of San Giovanni Battista. by Oderigi Lucarelli (1888); pages 452. The late 19th-century biographer, historian of Gubio, Oderigi Lucarelli, dismisses her work with perhaps excessive misogyny, stating: ''having applied herself to art only as a digression; her paintings, very warm in colour, are defective in perspective and in drawing. Avanzino Nucci (c. 1552–1629) was an Italian painter of the late-Renaissance period. Biography He was born in Gubbio and died in Rome. He trained with Niccolò Circignani (il Pomarancio). Bernardino Gagliardi was one of his pupils. His paintings can be found in the Roman churches of San Rocco all'Augusteo, San Silvestro al Quirinale, and San Paolo fuora le Mura. Some more paintings dated 1596 are in the portico of the former Carthusian Monastery and now museum of San Martino in Naples. They depict the ''Foundation of the Carthusian order by St Bruno of Cologne'', the ''Approval of the order by the Pope Urban II'' and the ''Meeting of the Saint with the Norman king Roger I of Sicily''.
