Basil D'Oliveira Trophy
The Basil D'Oliveira Trophy is a trophy played for by England and South Africa in the sport of cricket. The trophy is awarded to the team that wins a Test series between the two nations. If the series is a draw, the holder keeps the trophy. It was first contested in the 2004–05 series played in South Africa. The trophy is named after Basil D'Oliveira, a South African born English Test cricketer whose inclusion in the English squad to tour South Africa in 1968–69 led to the cancellation of the tour following objections from South African authorities due to D'Oliveira's classification as "coloured Coloureds ( af, Kleurlinge or , ) refers to members of multiracial ethnic communities in Southern Africa who may have ancestry from more than one of the various populations inhabiting the region, including African, European, and Asian. It was formed on 1 January 1997 as a single governing body to combine the roles formerly fulfilled by the Test and County Cricket Board, the National Cricket Association and the Cricket Council. In April 1998 the Women's Cricket Association was integrated into the organisation. The ECB's head offices are at Lord's Cricket Ground in north-west London. The board oversees all levels of cricket in England and Wales, including the national teams : England Men (Test, One Day International and T20I), England Women, England Lions (Men's second tier), Physical Disability, Learning Disability, Visually Impaired, and Deaf. Although the organisation is the England and Wales Cricket Board, it is referred to as the ECB not the EWCB as a result of a decision by those overseeing the transition from the previous bodies. English Cricket Team In South Africa In 1898–99
An English cricket team, organised and led by Lord Hawke, toured South Africa from December 1898 to April 1899. The team played two matches against the South Africa national cricket team which were retrospectively awarded Test status. There is uncertainty about the status of South African cricket as a whole in the late nineteenth century and so only two of Hawke's matches against provincial teams, those involving Transvaal and Cape Colony, are rated first-class. Hawke's XI is designated England for the Test series which they won 2–0. The South African teams were captained by Murray Bisset. Hawke's team was generally average in quality and nothing like a full-strength England team, but it did include three of the best players of the time in Schofield Haigh, Johnny Tyldesley and Albert Trott, although Trott's previous Test cricket had been for Australia. This was the second Test series hosted by England since the end of World War II in 1945. South Africa's previous visit to England was their successful 1935 tour. Background 1947 was a year in which the weather frequently made headlines in Great Britain. After one of the coldest winters on record, the summer was uncharacteristically warm and sunny. In terms of cricket, what the new ''Playfair Cricket Annual'' called a "glorious summer" contrasted sharply with the wet summer of 1946.''Playfair'', p. 8. The country was still recovering from the war with austerity and rationing a fact of daily life, but sporting events were eagerly awaited and drew large attendances.
