Barakat (2020 Film)
''Barakat'' is a 2020 South African family drama film directed by Amy Jephta and produced by Ephraim Gordon. It is the first Afrikaans-language Muslim feature film produced in South Africa. The film stars Vinette Ebrahim in the lead role and Joey Rasdien, Mortimer Williams, Quanita Adams and Keeno Lee Hector in supportive roles. Plot The film deals with family problems where an ageing matriarch brings together her fractured, dysfunctional family over Eid-al-Fitr in order to introduce her new romantic partner, after her husband's death some years ago. Production The film was shot in and around Lansdowne and Athlone on the Cape Flats, Cape Town, South Africa. Amy Jephta
Amy Jephta is a South African playwright, screenwriter and theatre director. Works include ''Kristalvlakte'', ''Ellen: The Ellen Pakkies Story'', ''Other People's Lives'', ''Sonskyn Beperk'', and ''While You Weren't Looking''. She is a lecturer at the University of Cape Town and the first recipient of the Emerging Theatre Director's Bursary in South Africa. Her work has been staged at The Fugard Theatre, The Bush Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre, Jermyn Street Theatre, Theatre503 and the Edinburgh International Festival. Jephta is an alumnus of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab and was one of the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans in 2013. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film every year since the award was created in 29th Academy Awards, 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The International Feature Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The category was previously called the Best Foreign Language Film, but this was changed in April 2019 to Best International Feature Film, after the Academy deemed the word "Foreign" to be outdated. Bonnie Mbuli (born 3 March 1979) is a South African actress, businesswoman, and television personality. She was a presenter on the SABC 3 show ''Afternoon Express''. Since 2020, she has starred in the BBC drama series ''Noughts + Crosses''. Early years Mbuli was born in Soweto, South Africa, in 1979. Ronald Crabtree (30 April 1930 – 2 February 1976) known by his stage name Danny Ross, was a British comedian best remembered for his role alongside Jimmy Clitheroe in the long running BBC Radio comedy show ''The Clitheroe Kid'' (1957–1973). Ross played the part of "Alfie Hall", the dim witted, mismatched boyfriend of Jimmy's posh sister "Susan" (Diana Day). Alfie Hall was a name Danny Ross had used prior to ''The Clitheroe Kid'', including during a television series in 1956 entitled ''I'm Not Bothered...'' which followed the exploits of milkman "Alf Hall" and his stuttering mate, "Wally Binns" (Glenn Melvyn). Idyllwild International Festival Of Cinema
The Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema (IIFC) is an independent film festival held since 2009 in Idyllwild, California. The festival is run by its founder, director Stephen Savage. The tenth annual IIFC was held March 5 through 10, 2019. As of 2019, the Grand Jury was composed of Wolfgang Bodison, Irene Bedard, Kristoff St. John, Conor O'Farrell, Juan Ruiz Anchia, Erika Christensen, Anne Archer and Peter Szebadi. IIFC's schedule overlaps with the much larger Palm Springs International Film Festival in Palm Springs. Wikus du Toit (born 18 June 1972) is a South African producer, actor, comedian, composer, and director. Background He was born in Bethal on 18 June 1972 and went on to study drama at the Tshwane University of Technology where he completed a master's degree in Cabaret.
