The Baptist Union of Southern Africa is a Baptist Christian denomination in South Africa. It is affiliated with the Baptist World Alliance and the Evangelical Alliance of South Africa. The headquarters is in Roodepoort in Gauteng province History The Baptist Union of Southern Africa has its origins in the first Baptist churches in Salem, Eastern Cape and in Grahamstown founded in 1823 by William Miller, an English Baptist pastor. The first ordained Baptist preacher to travel to South Africa was William Davies, who was sent by the Baptist Missionary Society in England. He arrived in 1832 and ministered in Grahamstown for a short period. Work in Kariega, about 16 miles from Grahamstown, began in 1834. Randburg is an area located in the Gauteng, Gauteng province of South Africa. Isabel Apawo Phiri is a Malawian theologian known for her work in gender justice, HIV/AIDS, and African theology. She has been a Deputy Secretary for the World Council of Churches since 2012. Early life and education Phiri, a Chewa person, was born in Malawi and brought up in the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian. She has a bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Malawi, a Master's in Religious Education from the University of Lancaster in England and a PhD from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. It was in South Africa that she was first exposed to feminist theology and liberation theology. Her doctoral thesis looked at the religious experience of Chewa women in Malawi. The Department of Higher Education and Training is one of the departments of the South African government. It oversees universities and other post-secondary education in South Africa. It was created in 2009 after the election of President Jacob Zuma, when the former Department of Education was divided.
