Banco Crédito Y Ahorro Ponceño (building)
The Banco Crédito y Ahorro Ponceño building (or Banco Crédito, for short), a historic building in Ponce, Puerto Rico, was the first and main office of the historic Banco Crédito y Ahorro Ponceño (English: ''Ponce Credit and Savings Bank''), and represents one of the last examples of the once popular turn-of-the-century eclectic architecture. The building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1987. It was built in 1924. The building was owned by Banco Crédito y Ahorro Ponceño which was one of the largest banking companies in the country of Puerto Rico during most of the twentieth century. Location The building is located on Calle Marina (Marina Street) and Calle Amor (Amor Street, now "Paseo Arias" (Arias Promenade), facing west across Plaza Degetau. Archivo Histórico de Ponce is a historical archive in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is considered "the most complete historical archive in Puerto Rico". History As early as 1882, there already existed an Office at the Ponce City Hall, called "Archivo de la Secretaria del Municipio de Ponce", charged as custodian of such records. The first two archivists were Dimas Gilas and Enrique León. The idea of conserving the documented patrimony of the city in a systematic fashion took shape during the administration of Mayor Grillasca in the 1940s but the Archive itself existed long before that. In 1973, Mayor Luis A. Morales revived the project almost immediately after he took office, consulting with the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña regarding its future. Ermelindo Salazar
Ermelindo Salazar Schuck (ca. 1830 – ca. 1910) was interim Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from May to 10 July 1887. He filled the mayoral post between the resignation of mayor Ramón Elices Montes and the arrival of Fernando Diez de Ulzurrún y Somellera, who was appointed mayor by the Central Provincial Government. Salazar Schuck was a merchant, landowner and banker, and is best remembered for his majestic residence in downtown Ponce (70 Cristina Street) and which today is home to the Carmen Solá de Pereira Ponce Cultural Center. Francisco Parra Duperón
Francisco Parra Duperón (1827–1899) born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, was a lawyer and banker. He became a lawyer at a young age and moved from Mayagüez to Ponce, Puerto Rico where he established his law practice. He was also one of the founders of the Banco Crédito y Ahorro Ponceño, and he was the bank's first president from 1895 until 1896. Teatro La Perla, was built in May 1864 under his initiative and that of Pedro Garriga. Legacy The city of Ponce honored him by naming Puerto Rico Highway 133 "Francisco Parra Duperon Street" in his honor. There is also a school in Barrio Canas named in his honor. Ricardo Ulpiano Colóm y Ferrer (3 April 1861 – 13 February 1906) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, during part of 1898. He was the second of two mayors to lead the municipality of Ponce under the Spanish Crown's "Decreto Autonómico para Puerto Rico", whereby Puerto Rico was granted autonomy by Spain. Early years He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on 3 April 1861. His parents were José Colom and Belen Ferrer.
