Mark Alexander Ballas Sr. (born December 25, 1960), known as Corky Ballas, is an American retired competitive ballroom dancer who holds several Latin dance championship titles. His son, Mark Ballas, is a professional dancer on ''Dancing with the Stars''. His father was George Ballas, who invented the Weed Eater lawn-trimming device. Personal life Ballas was born in Houston, Texas. He is the son of Mexican-American Maria Marulanda and Greek-American George Ballas, the inventor of the Weed Eater lawn-trimming device. His paternal grandparents, Karolos ("Charles") Ballas and Maria Lymnaos were immigrants to the United States from Greece. He has three sisters, Michelle, Maria, and Lillian, and one brother, George. George Ballas
George Charles Ballas Sr. (June 28, 1925 – June 25, 2011) was an American entrepreneur. He invented the first string trimmer, known as the Weed Eater in 1971. He is the father of ballroom dancer, Corky Ballas, and grandfather of professional dancer Mark Ballas of ''Dancing with the Stars''. Early life Ballas was born in Ruston, Louisiana. He was the son of Karolos ("Charles") Ballas and Maria (née Lymnaos), who were Greek immigrants that ran a restaurant. His brother is Peter Ballas. He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 in 1942 during World War II and was a bombardier. Ballas would later serve in the Korean War. Family He married Maria Marulanda who was of Mexican and Spanish descent in 1951. He had five children, including Corky Ballas. His grandson Mark Ballas is a dancer in ''Dancing with the Stars''. Gustavo Ballas
Gustavo Ballas (born February 10, 1958) is an Argentine retired super flyweight boxer who fought from 1976 until 1990. He retired with a record of 105 wins (29 KOs), 9 losses and 6 draws. Ballas fought mainly in Argentina. In 1979 he managed to outpoint future multi champion Santos Benigno Laciar in what is a still remembered fight in Argentina On September 12, 1981 he became the first ever WBA world super flyweight champion by defeating Sok-Chul Bae by TKO 8 in Estadio Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ballas lost the title on his next fight against Rafael Pedroza in Panama. He was unsuccessful on two other attempts at winning the super flyweight title, one from the WBA and another one for the WBC. Although he fought as much as 120 times in his career, only 4 of those fights were outside of Argentina, losing all of those fights, 3 of them for a world title. Mark Alexander Ballas Jr. (born May 24, 1986) is an American dancer, choreographer, singer-songwriter, musician, and actor. Ballas is a professional ballroom dancer on the ABC program ''Dancing with the Stars''. Shirley Annette Ballas (née Rich, formerly Stopford; born 6 September 1960) is an English ballroom dancer, dance teacher, and dance adjudicator.
