Balidaan (1997 Film)
''Balidaan'' (''Sacrifice'') is a 1997 Nepali historical drama film, directed by Tulsi Ghimire, and written by Modanath Prasrit. It was produced by Shyam Sapkota under the banner of Cinema Nepal. The film is set in Panchayat-era Nepal, and depicts a fictionalised version of the contemporary democracy movement. It features Hari Bansha Acharya in the lead role, alongside Anjali Lama, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Shanti Maskey, Keshav Bhattarai, Laxmi Giri and Neer Shah. The film was a critical and commercial success. In 2005, ''Balidaan'' was banned by the short-lived autocratic government headed by King Gyanendra for its portrayal of Nepal's communist movement. Tulsi Ghimire
Tulsi Ghimire is an Indian film director, screenwriter, film editor, cameraman, actor and lyricist known for his works in Nepali films. Regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of Nepali cinema, he is known for his romantic and masala film that dealt with social issues of Nepali society, portrayal of deep human emotions and masala films. He has directed some of the iconic Nepali films like Kusume Rumal, Deuta, Laure, Chino, Dakshina, Balidan and Darpan Chaya. Majority of his movies in 1990s were blockbusters and two of the movies Kusume Rumal and Darpan Chaya went on to become the highest grossing Nepali film of all time. ''Kusume Rumal'' ( ne, कुसुमे रुमाल; ) is a 1985 Nepali romantic film written and directed by Tulsi Ghimire. It was produced by Sumitra Paudel under the banner of Sayapatri Films. The film featured Bhuwan K.C, Tripti Nadakar, Udit Narayan and Neer Shah in lead roles. This was the first film in which singer Udit Narayan acted. It is one of the most loved films in Nepal and was the first Nepali film to celebrate silver jubilee. The film received critical acclaim for its story, portrayal of class discrimination, performance of the cast, especially Bhuwan K.C., and the chartbuster music.
