Baldric
A baldric (also baldrick, bawdrick, bauldrick as well as other rare or obsolete variations) is a belt worn over one shoulder that is typically used to carry a weapon (usually a sword) or other implement such as a bugle or drum. The word may also refer to any belt in general, but this usage is poetic or archaic. In modern contexts, military drum majors usually wear a baldric. Usage Baldrics have been used since ancient times, usually as part of military dress. The design offers more support for weight than a standard waist belt, without restricting movement of the arms, and while allowing easy access to the object carried. Alternatively, and especially in modern times, the baldric may fill a ceremonial role rather than a practical one. Most Roman tombstones in the third century had depictions of white baldrics. Design One end of the baldric was broad and finished in a straight edge, while the other was tapered to a narrow strip. The narrow end was brought through a scabb ...

Balderic Of Montfaucon
Saint Balderic (or Baudry) was the founding abbot of Montfaucon. Balderic and his sister Beuve (or Bove or Bova) lived in the 7th century in France. They were reputed to be children of Sigebert I, king of Austrasia, based on oral tradition recorded by Flodoard, Canon of Reims, three centuries later. They are also said to be related to King Dagobert, presumably Dagobert I of Austrasia. Balderic was ordained as a priest, and later founded the monastery of Montfaucon in the province of Lorraine. In 639 he established a convent "St-Pierre-les-Dames" in Reims for his sister Beuve. She was succeeded as abbess there by her and Balderic's niece Dode (or Doda). Balderic was a guide and tutor of Saint Wandregisel Saint Wandregisel (french: Wandrille) (c. 605–668 AD) was a Frankish courtier, monk, and abbot. Baldric Of Friuli
Baldric or Balderic (''Bald icus'') was the Duke of Friuli (''dux Foroiuliensis'') from 819, when he replaced Cadolah according to Thegan of Trier in his ''Vita Hludowici imperatoris'', until 828, when he was removed from office: the last Duke of Friuli. Baldric was an imperial legate in 815, when he crossed into Zealand with an army of Saxons and Abotrites to restore the deposed King of Denmark, Harald Klak. As ruler of Friuli, Baldric continued Cadolah's war against Ljudevit Posavski (Liudovitus), the Pannonian Croat leader. He was successful in expelling Ljudevit from imperial territory. He and Count Gerold also made war on the Bulgars at the order of Bertric, the count of the palace, in 826. With George, presbyter of Venice, he escorted a hydraulic organ to Aachen in 826. In 828, Baldric was removed from Friuli for his failure to have mounted an effective defense against the Bulgars during their invasion of 827, and the dukedom was divided into four counties.Annales Regni ...

Balderic Of Utrecht
Balderic of Cleves (Oldenzaal, 897 – Utrecht, 27 December 975) was a long-reigning and influential Bishop of Utrecht from 918 to 975. Although his father is only known from one document associating him with Betuwe, and his grave in his son's bishopric in Utrecht, the necrologium of Egmond in Utrecht calls his father count of Cleves (comes clivensis) and the necrologium of the Plechelmusbasilica in Oldenzaal, founded by Balderic, calls Balderic himself "Balderic of Cleves", "de clivis". Jongbloed (2006) argues that although the style of the title seems to be from a later generation, it should not be ignored. He also points to other evidence that the family had associations with the area, which was then referred to as the Duffelgau or Tubelgau. Balderic was a cousin of Duke Gilbert of Lorraine and the uncle of Bishop Balderic of Liège. He was the son of Count Ricfried in the Betuwe, who expelled the Vikings from Utrecht, after which Balderic, who like his immediate predecess ...

Balderic I Of Liège
Baldrick I was bishop of Liège and Lobbes Abbey, abbot of Lobbes from 955 until his death on 29 July 959. Balderic appears in a 943 charter made in his favour by his paternal uncle Balderic of Utrecht, Balderic, which was studied by Joseph Daris in 1896 and Léon Vanderkindere in 1900, leading to the following conclusions: *His mother who is not named in the charter was a sister of Reginar III, Count of Hainaut. *His mother's father was also named Reginar, and, we know from this document, was already dead in 943. *His father was Nibelung, Count of Betuwe, Count Nevelung, who was also already dead in 943. *His father's brother, also named Balderic, was bishop of Utrecht from 918 to 975. He was able to grant the use of lands near Sint-Odiliënberg to the support of Nevelung's family. *He had a younger brother named Rudolf, son of Nevelong, Rudolf, who was to receive benefit from the grant after his mother and elder brother died. Against royal wishes he was made a bishop whilst still ...

Balderic II Of Liège
Baldrick II (died 29 June 1018) was bishop of Liège from 1008 to his death at Heerewaarden in what is now the Netherlands. He was the nineteenth holder of that office and as Notker's successor can be considered the second "prince-bishop" of Liège. In 1015-1018 he founded St James's Church in the city. Family Balderic is believed to be a relative of his namesake Bishop Balderic of Utrecht, whose nephew Balderic I of Liège, shared not only the name but had also been a previous Bishop in Liège. Daris, Vanderkindere and Baerten all argued that he is likely to be son of Balderic I's younger brother Rudolf. Medieval sources describe Balderic as brother of the Giselbert of Loon, the first certain Count of Loon, which was within the spiritual jurisdiction of Liège, and not far from Liege itself. As pointed out by Hubert Van der Weerd, the counts also established a collegiate church at their first seat in Borgloon, dedicated to Saint Odulphus, who was associated with Utrecht. As m ...

Baldric Of Dol
Baldric of Dol ( 10507 January 1130) was prior and then abbot of Bourgueil from 1077 to 1106, then made bishop of Dol-en-Bretagne in 1107 and archbishop in 1108 until his death. He fulfilled his monastic duties by travelling to attend Church councils and writing of poetry and history, his most influential piece being a historical account of the First Crusade. Life He was born in Meung-sur-Loire, most likely in 1046, where he passed his early days. He was of a modest background, not coming from nobility and belonging to a rural farming class. While living in Meung-sur-Loire, Baldric may have attended the Benedictine house of Saint Liphard, which had recently been established, for his early education. This would only have been the beginning of Baldric’s education in monastic schools as, despite not coming from a particularly wealthy area, there were many schools established by the Church with talented instructors around the Loire Valley to educate students in Latin due to the increa ...

Balderic Of Florennes
{{italictitle The ''Gesta Adalberonis'' or ''Gesta Alberonis'' ("Deeds of Albero") is a biography of Adalbero, Archbishop of Trier (1131–52), written in medieval Latin prose by Balderic of Florennes. There is also a ''Gesta Alberonis metrica anonyma'', an anonymous biography of Albero's life down to 1145, written in hexameters. Balderic was born in Florennes and became a scholar in Paris, where he first met Albero in 1147. The archbishop invited him to come head the school at the cathedral of Trier, and he later served as provost of the college of Saint Simeon housed in the Porta Nigra. He wrote his life of Albero shortly after the latter's death. He himself disappears from the record after 1163 and presumably died around that time. He was praised for his scholarship by Wibald. The ''Gesta''’s account of Albero's youth is mostly legendary, but his years as bishop are reliably covered, especially those portions describing that to which Balderic was an eyewitness. The work is bi ...

Baldric (horse)
Baldric (16 May 1961 – 26 August 1986) was an American-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, best known for winning the classic 2000 Guineas in 1964. When racing in Britain, the horse was known as Baldric II. Baldric won twice in 1963 but after being beaten on his three-year-old debut he started a 20/1 outsider for the 2000 Guineas. He won the race, the most valuable ever run in Britain, and went on to win the Prix Perth and the Champion Stakes in Autumn. After two unsuccessful runs in 1965, Baldric was retired to stud where he had success as a sire of winners in both France and Japan. Background Baldric was a bay horse with no white markings bred in Kentucky by Howell E. Jackson and Dorothy Jackson's Bull Run Farm. As a two-year-old he was sent to race in Europe where he was trained by the Australian-born Ernie Fellows at Chantilly in France and raced in Dorothy Jackson's colours. His sire, Round Table was one of the most successful grass specialists in Ame ...

Baldrick
Baldrick is the name of several fictional characters featured in the long-running BBC historic comedy television series '' Blackadder''. Each one serves as Edmund Blackadder's servant and sidekick and acts as a foil to the lead character. Each series of ''Blackadder'' is set in a different period in British history, and each Baldrick character (as with the character of Edmund) is a descendant of the Baldrick from the preceding series. Just as Blackadder exists in many incarnations throughout the ages, so does Baldrick; whenever there is a Blackadder there is a Baldrick serving him. They are all portrayed by Sir Tony Robinson (although in the unaired pilot episode he was played by Philip Fox). The relationship between Edmund and Baldrick evolves significantly; in the first series of the show, Baldrick is more intelligent than Blackadder, but this dynamic is reversed in subsequent series, with Baldrick's intelligence decreasing as the show continued. He is the only character o ...
