Badminton At The 2014 Commonwealth Games – Men's Singles
The men's singles badminton event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games was held from July 29 to August 3 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. The defending gold medalist was Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who won in Badminton at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, 2006 and Badminton at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2010. This year, Lee withdrew from the tournament due to an injury. The athletes were drawn into an elimination stage draw. Once a team lost a match it was no longer able to compete. Each match was contested as the best of three games. The draw for the competition was done on July 21, 2014. Emirates Arena
The Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, known for sponsorship reasons as the Emirates Arena, is an indoor arena and velodrome in Dalmarnock, Glasgow, Scotland. Built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, these venues hosted the badminton and track cycling events. Situated opposite Celtic Park in the East End of Glasgow, the complex is the headquarters of Sportscotland and Scottish Cycling. History It was built on a site at a cost of £113 million. The construction work took place between 2009 and 2012. The venue opened in October 2012. In September 2017, neighbours Celtic F.C. had plans approved for the construction of a hotel complex within their land, situated directly across the road from the arena and velodrome. Srikanth Kidambi
Srikanth Kidambi (born 7 February 1993) is an Indian badminton player. A former world no. 1, Kidambi was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2018. and the Arjuna award in 2015. In 2021, he became the first Indian to reach the World Championship final in the men's singles discipline. Early life and background Srikanth Nammalwar Kidambi was born in Ravulapalem, Andhra Pradesh on 7 February 1993 to a Telugu family. His father, KVS Krishna, is a landlord, and his mother Radha is a house-wife. His older brother K. Nandagopal is also a badminton player and junior national champion with his brother. Emmanuel Donkor
Emmanuel Yaw Donkor (born 13 January 1994) is a Ghanaian badminton player. He competed at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2016, he was the runner-up at the Rose Hill International tournament in the mixed doubles event partnered with Gifty Mensah. Teamed-up with Stella Amasah, they were the finalist at the 2017 Benin International tournament. He and Amasah also the semi-finalist at the Ivory Coast International tournament. He educated at the University of Cape Coast. Edwin Ekiring
Edwin Ekiring (born 22 December 1986) is a Ugandan badminton player, nicknamed "The Black Pearl". He is tall and weighs . Career At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, Ekiring competed in the men's singles as well as the mixed team event. In the singles he was defeated in the first round, 17–21, 17–21 by Sri Lankan Dinuka Karunaratne. In pool B of the mixed team event he won singles matches in fixtures against Jamaica and Kenya but lost matches to players from Australia and New Zealand. Playing with Abraham Wogute, he lost team doubles matches against Jamaica, Australia and New Zealand but beat the pair from Kenya as Uganda were eliminated from the competition at the pool stage. Prakash Vijayanath (born 7 November 1994) is a South African badminton player. Career Vijayanath was born in India but moved to South Africa when he was four, and started playing badminton at age six in Johannesburg. In 2013, he was selected among the 14 best African players to be a member of the Road to Rio Project organised by the BWF and Badminton Confederation of Africa, to provide financial and technical support to African players and the lead-up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Buwenaka Tharindu Dullewa Dumbukola Goonathileka (born 8 May 1996) is a Sri Lankan badminton player. He competed at the 2016 and 2019 South Asian Games and won three silver and two bronze medals. Career Goonethilleka partnered with Sachin Dias and won a bronze medal at the 2016 South Asian Games.
