''Back Roads and Abandoned Motels'' is the tenth studio album by the alt country band The Jayhawks, released on July 13, 2018. Background Along with two new songs written by Gary Louris, the album mainly features songs co-written by Louris for previous projects. The Jayhawks
The Jayhawks are an American alternative country and country rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene in the mid-1980s. Led by vocalists/guitarists/songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson (musician), Mark Olson, their country rock sound was influential on many bands who played the Twin Cities circuit during the 1980s and 1990s, such as Uncle Tupelo, the Gear Daddies and the Honeydogs. They have released eleven studio albums, with and without Olson (who left the band for the first time in 1995), including five on the American Recordings (US), American Recordings label. After going on hiatus from 2005 to 2009, the 1995 lineup of the band reunited and released the album ''Mockingbird Time'' in September 2011; Olson left the band for the second time after the tour to promote the album. Ari Hest (born 16 June 1979) is an American singer-songwriter from the Bronx borough of New York. Biography Early life and education Hest's father is a college music professor and his mother a cantor. His older brother, Danny, is Hest's former manager. Hest took piano lessons as a child and later taught himself to play guitar. Hest attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY beginning in 1999 and later transferred to New York University, where he received a degree in Communications in 2002. Emerson Hart (born July 21, 1969) is a songwriter, vocalist, guitarist and producer. He is the lead singer and songwriter of the alternative rock band Tonic. Biography Emerson Hart was born in Washington, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey and attended Red Bank Catholic High School. Emerson Hart's father Jennings sang for the USO and his mother Sandra is a former television hostess. His father was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was prescribed medicine to regulate his mental disorder, but he often resisted treatment, and he and Sandra divorced in 1977.
