Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing pediatric HIV infection and eliminating pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment programs. Founded in 1988, the organization works in 12 countries around the world. History Background Elizabeth Glaser (née Elizabeth Meyer) (November 11, 1947 – December 3, 1994) was an American AIDS activist and child advocate. She was married to actor and director Paul Michael Glaser. Glaser contracted HIV in 1981 during the early stages of the AIDS epidemic after receiving a transfusion of contaminated blood while giving birth to her daughter Ariel. Glaser unknowingly passed the virus to Ariel and to her son Jake, who was born three years later. The virus went undetected in all three family members until they underwent HIV testing in 1985, at which time Ariel began suffering from a series of unexplained illnesses. Ariel had developed advanced AIDS at a t ...

Brian David-Marshall
Brian Anthony David-Marshall, often credited as Brian Marshall, (b. 1967 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American comic book and collectible card game industry figure. He has worked in all facets of both industries, from publishing to retail, from writing to editorial. He was a founding partner of Eternity Comics, a comic book publisher active in the late 1980s and early 1990s; and is currently president and publisher of the Web3-based digital entertainment company InterPop. Marshall got his start in comics publishing in 1985–1986 as an editor with the short-lived company Deluxe Comics/Lodestone Publishing, where he did some writing for the series ''Codename: Danger'' and ''Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents''. In 1986, he and writer-editor David Campiti co-founded the comics packager TriCorp Entertainment. With private financing from comics distributor Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Marshall and Tony Eng formed Eternity Comics (at that point based in Brooklyn, New York). Campiti packa ...

Biodiversity Monitoring Switzerland
The Biodiversity Monitoring Switzerland (BDM) is a Swiss Confederation programme for the long-term monitoring of species diversity in Switzerland. Introduction The Biodiversity Monitoring Switzerland surveys the long-term development of species diversity in selected organism groups in Switzerland. The focus is on surveying common and widespread species in order to make informed statements about the development of species diversity in common landscapes. Biodiversity Monitoring Switzerland is a programme run by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN. It is a long-term environmental monitoring project, comparable with other national programmes, such as the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI), the National Surface Water Quality Monitoring Programme (NAWA), the Swiss Soil Monitoring Network (NABO) and the project “Monitoring the Effectiveness of Habitat Conservation in Switzerland” (WBS). There are similar biodiversity monitoring programmes in place in the United Kingdom ( ...

Bateson–Dobzhansky–Muller Model
The Bateson–Dobzhansky–Muller model, also known as Dobzhansky–Muller model, is a model of the evolution of genetic incompatibility, important in understanding the evolution of reproductive isolation during speciation and the role of natural selection in bringing it about. The theory was first described by William Bateson in 1909, then independently described by Theodosius Dobzhansky in 1934, and later elaborated in different forms by Herman Muller, H. Allen Orr and Sergey Gavrilets. The Dobzhansky–Muller model describes the negative epistatic interactions that occur between different alleles (versions) of different genes with a different evolutionary history. These genetic incompatibilities can occur when populations are hybridising. When two populations diverge from a common ancestor and become isolated from each other, thus meaning there is no interbreeding between the two, mutations can accumulate in both populations. These changes represent evolutionary change in the ...

M141 Bunker Defeat Munition
The M141 Bunker Defeat Munition (BDM) is a disposable single-shot, shoulder-fired rocket launcher designed to defeat hardened structures. It is a modification of the United States Marine Corps Mk 153 Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon (SMAW) and is also called the SMAW-D (where 'D' is for 'Disposable'). It was designed to fill the void in the United States Army inventory of a "bunker buster" weapon. Design The SMAW-D operates on the principle that the recoil created by launching the rocket is counteracted by a "backblast" of gases fired from the rear of the weapon. This makes the SMAW-D inherently dangerous, especially in confined, urban areas, as is with all weapons of this design. The M141 has two configurations: a carry mode in which the launcher is long, and a ready to fire mode in which the launcher is extended to its full length of . The warhead is the same High-explosive, dual-purpose (HEDP) as the USMC SMAW. It is effective against masonry and concrete bunk ...

Browning BDM
The Browning BDM is a semi-automatic pistol designed and manufactured by the Browning Arms Company from 1991 until production ceased in 1998. Similar in appearance to Browning's ( FN Herstal's P-35 model) " Hi-Power" pistol, the BDM was actually a new design created to compete in service trials for a proposal as a standard issue pistol for the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). However, the BDM failed to win any large scale law enforcement contracts, so was instead sold only in the retail market. Having a similar profile to the Browning P-35 Hi-Power, the BDM and its variants are often conflated as mere variants of the much older P-35 model, or other newer Browning or FN Herstal pistols that were updated variants of the P-35, such as the Hi-Power DAO model. However, the Browning BDM pistol is distinct from all forms of the Browning Hi-Power pistol. Design and Development The Browning model BDM and its variants were designed and developed exclusively by the Brow ...

Diacetyl Monoxime
Diacetyl monoxime is a chemical compound described by the formula CH3C(O)C(NOH)CH3. This colourless solid is the monooxime derivative of the diketone butane-2,3-dione (also known as diacetyl and biacetyl). Its biological effects include inhibiting certain ATPases. Preparation The compound can be prepared from butanone by reaction with ethyl nitrite. It is an intermediate in the preparation of dimethylglyoxime Dimethylglyoxime is a chemical compound described by the formula CH3C(NOH)C(NOH)CH3. Its abbreviation is dmgH2 for neutral form, and dmgH− for anionic form, where H stands for hydrogen. This colourless solid is the dioxime derivative of the dike ...: : Uses Diacetyl monoxime can be used with thiosemicarbazide to selectively detect small amounts of urea in the presence of other nitrogen-containing compounds. Background Debug Mode Interface
Background debug mode (BDM) interface is an electronic interface that allows debugging of embedded systems. Specifically, it provides in-circuit debugging functionality in microcontrollers. It requires a single wire and specialized electronics in the system being debugged. It appears in many Freescale Semiconductor products. The interface allows a ''Host'' to manage and query a ''target''. Specialized hardware is required in the target device. No special hardware is required in the host; a simple bidirectional I/O pin is sufficient. I/O signals The signals used by BDM to communicate data to and from the target are initiated by the host processor. The host negates the transmission line, and then either * Asserts the line sooner, to output a 1, * Asserts the line later, to output a 0, * Tri-states its output, allowing the target to drive the line. The host can sense a 1 or 0 as an input value. At the start of the next bit time, the host negates the transmission line, and t ...
