BBC Radio Wales
BBC Radio Wales is a Welsh radio station owned and operated by BBC Cymru Wales, a division of the BBC. It began broadcasting on 13 November 1978, replacing the 'Radio 4 Wales' opt-out service (previously the Welsh Home Service). Radio Wales broadcasts in English, whilst sister network Radio Cymru has Welsh language programming. As of August 2022, the station's managing editor is Carolyn Hitt, who is also editor of BBC Wales Sport. According to RAJAR, BBC Radio Wales has a weekly audience of 298,000 listeners and a listening share of 5.1%, as of September 2022. History In November 1978, BBC Radio Wales was launched as a distinct station on the former Radio 4 opt-out frequency of 882 kHz. Initially the station broadcast for only 20 hours per week, and relayed output from Radios 2 and 4 at other times. BBC Cymru Wales New Broadcasting House
BBC Cymru Wales New Broadcasting House (), previously known as the BBC Cymru Wales Headquarters building, is the headquarters of BBC Cymru Wales in Central Square, Cardiff. It operates many of its broadcasting services (radio and TV) from there using IP-based studios. It also serves as a base for S4C. The £120 million building replaced the BBC Cymru Wales Broadcasting House in Llandaff, when 1,000 production and support staff began moving into the new facility in October 2019. The building is officially located at 3 Central Square, but has also been referred to as BBC New Broadcasting House. Operation The building's first live transmission was made on 14 July 2020 by continuity announcer Tim Cooper on BBC Two Wales. BBC Radio Cymru 2
BBC Radio Cymru is a Welsh language radio network owned and operated by BBC Cymru Wales, a division of the BBC. It broadcasts on two stations across Wales on FM, DAB, digital TV and online. The main network broadcasts for hours a day from 5:30am to midnight with overnight programming simulcast from the BBC World Service after closedown. A second station, Radio Cymru 2, providing separate music and sports programming, broadcasts on digital and online platforms. Radio Cymru's managing editor is Dafydd Meredydd, a former presenter and producer for both stations. Alun Williams
David Alun Williams, OBE (26 August 1920 – 30 March 1992) was a Welsh radio presenter who became one of the best known voices on BBC radio when he commentated on events such as the Coronation in 1953 and sports events including rugby, swimming and the Olympic Games. Life and career Alun Williams was born in Port Talbot, South Wales, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He was educated at Llandeilo Grammar School, Pontypridd Grammar School and University College, Cardiff. He then served in the Royal Navy, rising from ordinary seaman to become an intelligence officer serving in the Far East. He began his broadcasting career when he was a student and after working as an outside broadcast assistant became a commentator for the BBC. Vincent Kane
Vincent Kane, OBE (born 1935) is a Welsh broadcaster and writer, known primarily for his career with the BBC. He was chairman of the Wales Quality Centre, the International Festival of Musical Theatre and the Cardiff Initiative. Biography Kane was born in Cardiff in 1935. Chris Stuart
Christopher Elliot Stuart (19 February 1949 – 12 July 2022) was a British journalist, songwriter and radio and television presenter and producer. He was executive producer of the BBC Two quiz series ''Only Connect''. As a presenter, he fronted the early breakfast show on BBC Radio 2 between 1988 and 1991. He was also one of the first presenters on BBC Radio Wales. Life and career Stuart was born in Durham on 19 February 1949 and grew up in Manchester, Hull, Birmingham, Nottinghamshire, before his family settled in Leicestershire. Teleri Bevan
Welsh broadcaster and author Teleri Bevan, ''b. 1931, d. 2020 (aged 88)'',was the founding editor of BBC Radio Wales. She was also the author of three nonfiction books including ''Esmé: Guardian of Snowdonia'' (2014), a biography of Welsh conservationist Esmé Kirby. Early life and education Bevan was born near Aberystwyth in Wales in 1931. She later studied at Bangor University in Bangor, Wales. Rhondda
Rhondda , or the Rhondda Valley ( cy, Cwm Rhondda ), is a former coalmining area in South Wales, historically in the county of Glamorgan. It takes its name from the River Rhondda, and embraces two valleys – the larger Rhondda Fawr valley (''mawr'' large) and the smaller Rhondda Fach valley (''bach'' small) – so that the singular "Rhondda Valley" and the plural are both commonly used.
