''BBC Wales Today'' is the BBC's national television news programme for Wales, broadcast on BBC One Wales from the BBC Cymru Wales New Broadcasting House, headquarters of BBC Cymru Wales in Central Square, Cardiff, Central Square, Cardiff. According to the BBC, it is the world's longest-running television news programme. The programme can be watched in any part of the UK (and Europe) on Sky Digital (UK & Ireland), digital satellite channel 972 on the BBC UK regional TV on satellite service. Selected video packages from the programme are available on the BBC news website. History The programme began at 6:10 pm on Monday 17 September 1962. BBC Wales
BBC Cymru Wales is a division of the BBC and the main public broadcaster in Wales. It is one of the four BBC national regions, alongside the BBC English Regions, BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Scotland. Established in 1964, BBC Cymru Wales is based in Cardiff and directly employs some 1,200 people to produce a range of programmes for television, radio and online services in both English and Welsh. Behnaz Akhgar
Behnaz Akhgar ( fa, بهناز اخگر; born 21 June 1980 ) is an Iranian- Welsh weather presenter currently working for BBC's Wales Today. She broadcasts the morning and weekend bulletins with Sue Charles, and acts as a relief presenter for meteorologist Derek Brockway. Behnaz, often called Benni, is from a Persian-Welsh background; her first language is Persian. She entered the Miss Wales pageant in 1998. Early life Akhgar was born in Shiraz, Iran. When she arrived in Britain she spoke no English. She moved to Swansea when she was 10 years old, attended Terrace Road School, then Dynevor Comprehensive School (where coincidentally her parents opened a shop around the corner from there named "Dagwood's") and has lived in Wales since. Sue Charles
Sue Charles is a Welsh TV and weather presenter for BBC Wales. Sue presents the morning and weekend weather broadcasts for ''Wales Today,'' as well as acting as a relief weather presenter for meteorologist Derek Brockway. Born and educated in Llandrindod Wells, Powys, she took a holiday job with Radio Wyvern. She started out on the youth programme "Street Cred," and ended up producing and later as a stand-in Christmas news presenter. Moving to BBC Radio 1, she became a music reporter, before moving to BBC Radio 2 in 1991, and then to BBC Radio Wales as a journalist. In 1998 Charles made the move to television as a presenter on Wales Today. Derek Brockway
Derek Clifford Brockway (born 29 October 1967) is a Welsh meteorologist. After 30 years of being employed by the Met Office he joined the BBC in October 2016. Brockway is based at BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff, Wales and presents weather forecasts on radio, television and online as well as appearing in other programmes. Education and training Brockway was born in Barry and attended Holton Road Primary School. His interest in the weather began as a boy during the long, hot summer of 1976. He went to Barry Boys Comprehensive from 1979 to 1986 where he studied A-Levels in mathematics, physics and geology. After leaving school he joined the Civil Service and his first, brief, post was as a clerical assistant for the Department of Social Security. Rebecca John (born 15 April 1970) is a presenter and reporter for ''Wales Today'', BBC Wales on British television. John was born in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. She read for a degree in French and German at Robinson College, Cambridge, between 1989 and 1993, before completing a postgraduate course in journalism at Trinity & All Saints College. Her first job was a news reporter and presenter at Swansea Sound. She moved to work for BBC Wales in 1994 working in radio news for three years before becoming a TV reporter and news presenter. Lucy Owen (born 18 June 1971 as Lucy Jane Cohen) is a Welsh television news reader. Early life Owen attended Howell's School in Llandaff, Cardiff, and graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London, in English. She is of Jewish heritage. Career Owen began her broadcasting career at BBC Radio Wales as a researcher, later progressing to a reporting and co-presenting role for a features programme. She joined HTV Wales in 1995 as a newsreader for regional opt-outs during GMTV, and between 1996 and 2007, she co-presented ''Wales Tonight'', the regional news programme on ITV Wales, broadcast from Cardiff. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The first known case was identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The disease quickly spread worldwide, resulting in the COVID-19 pandemic. BBC 2W
BBC 2W was a digital television channel run by the BBC in Wales until January 2009. It replaced the standard BBC Two broadcast on digital services in Wales — running on weekdays from 8.30pm to 10pm. Launched on 5 November 2001, it had an initial reach of 1.1 million viewers. History It served as a replacement for BBC Choice Wales, which had been shut down on 30 March 2001. 2W broadcast in English and was aimed at the English-speaking population, unlike S4C, which broadcasts primarily in Welsh. The digital-only service was replaced with a single BBC Two for Wales on 2 January 2009. BBC News At Ten
''BBC News at Ten'' formerly known as the ''BBC Ten O'Clock News'' or the ''Ten O'Clock News'' is the flagship evening news programme for the BBC News channel and British television channel BBC One on weekdays and Sundays at 10:00pm. Huw Edwards is the lead presenter for the bulletin on weekdays. The Sunday edition of the bulletin is presented by Mishal Husain or Clive Myrie. The programme was controversially moved from 9:00pm to 10:00pm on 16 October 2000.
