B'Sides Themselves
''B'Sides Themselves'' is a compilation of single B-sides by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion, which was released on CD only in January 1988. This was the first time that those B-sides were made available in the then still relatively new Compact Disc format (with the exception of "Tux On", which had featured on a limited edition CD single of "Sugar Mice" that was only sold at concerts). However, vinyl LP and cassette versions were issued in June 1988. The compilation includes "Market Square Heroes", originally the A-side track for Marillion's 1982 debut single release, but here is included because it was re-recorded for the B-side of "Punch and Judy" (1984). "Three Boats Down From The Candy" was originally the B-side of "Market Square Heroes", but the version on this album is the re-recorded B-side of "Punch and Judy". Fish (singer)
Derek William Dick (born 25 April 1958), better known by his stage name Fish, is a Scottish singer-songwriter and occasional actor. Fish became widely known as the lead singer and lyricist of the neo-progressive rock band Marillion from 1981 until 1988. He released 11 UK Top 40 singles with the band, including the Top Ten singles "Kayleigh", "Lavender" and "Incommunicado", and five Top Ten albums, including a number-one with '' Misplaced Childhood''. In his solo career, Fish has explored contemporary pop and traditional folk, and released a further five Top 40 singles and a Top 10 album. Mick Pointer
Michael Pointer (born 22 July 1956) is an English drummer. He is known for his work in the neo-progressive rock bands Marillion and Arena. Away from music, he has also worked as a kitchen designer. Career Pointer was the original drummer and a founding member of Marillion. He appeared on the band's debut EP ''Market Square Heroes'' (1982) and debut LP ''Script for a Jester's Tear'' (1983). He was sacked from the band following the album's UK tour and ultimately replaced by Ian Mosley. Lead singer Fish later told ''Classic Rock'' that Pointer had been dismissed because he had "never liked Mick's drumming", "his timing was awful" and "everybody was developing except him". After his acrimonious departure from Marillion, Pointer did not perform music for another ten years and instead became a kitchen designer, something he had served an apprenticeship in as a teenager. Pete Trewavas
Peter Trewavas (born 15 January 1959) is an English musician, known as the bassist of Marillion. He joined in 1982, replacing Diz Minnitt, while acting occasionally as a backing vocalist and acoustic guitarist. Trewavas was born in Middlesbrough, but spent much of his childhood in the Buckinghamshire town of Aylesbury. It was in Aylesbury that he became involved in several bands, having most success with The Metros, before taking up his long term role in Marillion. Trewavas is also a member of the progressive rock supergroup Transatlantic. In 2004, he co-founded another group called Kino, with John Mitchell (Arena), John Beck (It Bites) and Chris Maitland (ex-Porcupine Tree). Mark Kelly (keyboardist)
Mark Colbert Kelly (born 9 April 1961) is an Irish keyboardist and member of the neo-progressive rock band Marillion. He was raised in Ireland until he moved to England with his parents in 1969. Kelly was an electronics student while performing part-time in the progressive/psychedelic band Chemical Alice, who released their EP ''Curiouser and Curiouser'' in 1981. He was invited to join Marillion when they supported Chemical Alice, replacing previous keyboardist Brian Jelliman. His first performance with the band was at the Great Northern at Cambridge on 1 December 1981. He has appeared on every Marillion studio album. Kelly also appeared on John Wesley's album ''Under the Red and White Sky'' in 1994 and on Jump's album ''Myth of Independence'' in 1995 on production and keyboards. Steve Rothery
Steven Rothery (born 25 November 1959) is an English musician. He is the original guitarist and the longest continuous member of the British rock band Marillion. Outside Marillion, Rothery has recorded two albums as part of the duo the Wishing Tree and an instrumental solo album, ''The Ghosts of Pripyat'', released in September 2014. He also founded the British Guitar Academy in 2011. Biography Rothery was born in Brampton, then in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, and from the age of six he lived in Whitby, North Yorkshire. "Garden Party (The Great Cucumber Massacre)" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was the second single released from their debut album ''Script for a Jester's Tear''. It reached number 16 in the UK Singles Chart in 1983, the band's biggest singles chart success prior to 1985. The song is a parody of social elitism and snobbery. The B-side is a live version of "Margaret" (recorded at Edinburgh Playhouse, 7 April 1983). "Lavender" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was released as the second single from their 1985 UK number one concept album '' Misplaced Childhood''. Lady Nina is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. First released in 1985 on the B-side to the #2 UK hit single "Kayleigh", it was the only single from the Extended Play, EP ''Brief Encounter (album), Brief Encounter'' released in the United States by Capitol Records in April 1986. A music video was also shot to promote it. While the EP climbed to #67 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200 album charts, "Lady Nina" did not make the Billboard Hot 100, but did reach #30 on the Mainstream Rock (chart), Mainstream Rock charts. "Incommunicado" is a song by British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It served as the lead single from their fourth studio album, ''Clutching at Straws'' (1987). Released on 11 May 1987, it reached number six on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's third top-10 hit and their last until 2004's "You're Gone (Marillion song), You're Gone". He Knows You Know
"He Knows You Know" is a song by the British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. It was their second single, with "Charting the Single" as the B-side. It was released from their first album, ''Script for a Jester's Tear'', and peaked at number 35 on the UK Singles Chart. The song's theme is drug abuse, and alludes particularly to intravenous drug use. In concert, lead vocalist Fish would often introduce it as "The Drug Song" and state that it was inspired by drug use while he was working at the Job/Benefits centre in Aylesbury. As with all Marillion songs during this period, the lyrics were written by Fish. The music video for this song features Fish struggling in a straitjacket having visions of a Jackson's Chameleon as featured on the album artwork of Marillion's first three albums.
