Azúcar Amarga
''Azúcar Amarga'' (''Bitter Sugar'') is a 1996 American-Dominican co-production directed by Cuban filmmaker Leon Ichaso. The film was shot in black-and-white, and was filmed in Santo Domingo starring a cast of Cuban-American émigrés, though it also uses archival footage from Cuba. Plot Gustavo, a patriotic Cuban communist, catches the eye of an attractive girl, Yolanda, at a rock concert where his brother Bobby is performing. Before he can approach her, the concert is broken up by police. Later Gustavo sees Yolanda in public, and befriends her. Gustavo tells his father Tomás, a psychiatrist widower, about his affections for Yolanda. Yolanda and Gustavo disagree over Gustavo's communist views; they agree not to talk about politics. Gustavo is granted a scholarship to study at the University in Prague. Leon Ichaso (born August 3, 1948) is a Cuban-American writer and film director. Some of his prominent works include El Super, Bitter Sugar, and others. Biography Early life Leon Ichaso was born in Havana, Cuba, on August 3, 1948. Ichaso migrated to Mexico at the age of 14 and then to the United States with his mother, Antonia Ichaso, and sister, Mari Rodriguez Ichaso. His father initially stayed behind in Cuba to support the Cuban Revolution. Five years later, Ichaso's father joined his family in New York. Career As a director, Leon Ichaso's first movie was the Spanish-language feature '' El Super'' (1979), based on an Off-Broadway play about an immigrant building superintendent trying to make his way in New York.
