Azeville
Azeville is a commune in the Manche department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. World War II Some of the first German fortifications built on the French coast were started at Azeville battery in 1941. The Germans installed four First World War 105mm guns in concrete casements. The guns at the battery fired upon Utah Beach on D-Day (6 June 1944) and the battery fell into American hands on the morning of 9 June 1944. The battery is now a museum. After the liberation of the area by Allied Forces in early June 1944, engineers of the Ninth Air Force IX Engineering Command began construction of a combat Advanced Landing Ground to the south of the town. Declared operational on 24 June, the airfield was designated as " A-7", it was initially used by the 365th Fighter Group which flew P-47 Thunderbolts until mid-August when the unit moved into Central France. Azeville Battery
The Azeville battery was a World War II German artillery battery constructed close to the French village of Azeville in the Manche department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. It formed a part of Germany's Atlantic Wall coastal fortifications and was involved in the Normandy landings and shelled the US landing beach UTAH ( away) for three days after D-Day, 6 June 1944. The battery was heavily bombed on 9 June 1944 and fell to the Americans the same day. The site is owned by the local council and one of the battery's gun casemates now houses a museum. Azeville/Fontenay (Azeville) Airfield is an abandoned World War II military airfield, which is located near the commune of Azeville in the Normandy region of northern France. Located just outside Azeville, the United States Army Air Force established a temporary airfield shortly after the Allied landings in France( D-Day) on 16 June 1944. The airfield was one of the first established in the liberated area of Normandy, being constructed by the IX Engineering Command, 819th Engineer Aviation Battalion. Advanced Landing Ground
Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) were temporary advance airfields constructed by the Allies during World War II during the liberation of Europe. They were built in the UK prior to the invasion and thereafter in northwest Europe from 6 June 1944 to V-E Day, 7 May 1945. Unlike the permanent airfields built in the United Kingdom and designed for the strategic bombardment of Germany, the tactical combat airfields on the continent were temporary, often improvised airfields to be used by the tactical air forces to support the advancing ground armies engaged on the battlefield. The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts.
