''Azerbaijan International'' is a magazine that discusses issues related to Azerbaijanis around the world. It was established in 1993 shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union when Azerbaijan gained its independence. Since then, it has been published quarterly in English with occasional articles in the Azerbaijani language in Latin and Arabic scripts. The magazine has offices in Los Angeles and Baku. Each issue includes about 100-colored pages and relates to a specific theme. Past themes have included art, music, literature, folklore, architecture, archeology, health, environment, international relations, business, trends and transitions. Kon-Tiki
The ''Kon-Tiki'' expedition was a 1947 journey by raft across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands, led by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl. The raft was named ''Kon-Tiki'' after the Inca god Viracocha, for whom "Kon-Tiki" was said to be an old name. ''The Kon-Tiki Expedition: By Raft Across the South Seas, Kon-Tiki'' is also the name of Heyerdahl's book, the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Academy Award–winning Kon-Tiki (1950 film), 1950 documentary film chronicling his adventures, and the Kon-Tiki (2012 film), 2012 dramatized feature film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Azerbaijani Americans ( az, Amerikalı Azərbaycanlılar) are Americans of the Azerbaijani ancestry from the Republic of Azerbaijan and Iranian Azerbaijan or people possessing Azerbaijani, Iranian, and/or American citizenship. Kurban Said ( az, Qurban Səid/, ) is the pseudonym of the author of ''Ali and Nino'', a novel originally published in 1937 in the German language by the Austrian publisher E.P. Tal. The novel has since been published in more than 30 languages. The true identity of the author is in dispute. Meaning of the pseudonym "Kurban Said" In Azerbaijan, where the novel "Ali and Nino" is set, "Kurban" is pronounced "Gurban." The root of the word originates in the Semitic languages, and connotes "sacrifice", a traditional religious concept common to Middle Eastern cultures. "Said" means "joyful" or "fortunate."
