William Edmondstoune Aytoun
William Edmondstoune Aytoun FRSE (21 June 18134 August 1865) was a Scottish poet, lawyer by training, and professor of rhetoric and belles lettres at the University of Edinburgh. He published poetry, translation, prose fiction, criticism and satire and was a lifelong contributor to the Edinburgh literary periodical Blackwood's Magazine. He was also a collector of Scottish ballads. In the early 1850s, Professor Aytoun lent his name as a supporter of the fledgling National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights. His distinctive legacy as a teacher has led to him being called the 'first modern professor of English Literature'. Andrew Aytoun
Andrew Aytoun (died 1547), was a Scottish soldier and engineer, and captain of Stirling Castle. Aytoun worked for James IV of Scotland, whose reign lasted from 1488 until his death at the battle of Flodden in 1513. He was regarded as a member of the king's household and bought livery clothes in " Rissilis" black. Career He was Chamberlain of the royal estates in Stirlingshire and Strathearn. He was appointed Baillie of Stirlingshire and Keeper of Stirling Castle in February 1501. He was also given a tack of lands at Inveralloun and the West part of Tillicoultry. From 1497 to 1508 he was master of building work at Stirling Castle, receiving £1,180 Scots in March 1505, and £445 in August 1506 with another £60 for hauling timber in October. The "King's Old Building" at Stirling Castle was completed by Walter Merlioun. Major General Roger Aytoun was a soldier at the Great Siege of Gibraltar who came to notice when he married an ageing widow and was given Hough Hall in Manchester. Aytoun was known as ''Spanking Roger'' because of his love of fighting. Life Aytoun had the same name as his grandfather. Robert Aytoun
Sir Robert Aytoun or Ayton (1570–1638) was a Scottish poet. Biography Aytoun was the son of Andrew Ayton of Kinaldie Castle, in Fife, Scotland, and Mary Lundie. Aytoun and his elder brother John entered St Leonard's College in St Andrews in 1584. After graduating MA from St Andrews in 1588, he studied civil law at Paris. He appears to have been well known to his literary contemporaries in Scotland and England. He became a groom in the privy chamber of King James in succession to Laurence Marbury, was knighted and became a gentleman of the bedchamber in 1612. He became secretary to Anne of Denmark in succession to another Scottish poet, William Fowler. He was sent as ambassador to Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor in 1609. Roger Sinclair Aytoun (18 February 1823 – 1904) was a Scottish Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1862 to 1874. Biography Aytoun was born at Edinburgh, the son of John Aytoun of Inchdairnie, Fifeshire and his wife Margaret Anne Jeffery, daughter of J. Jeffery M.D. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge graduating B.A. in 1845 and M.A. in 1848. He was a Deputy Lieutenant and J.P. of Fifeshire.
