Aysgarth railway station is a disused railway station in North Yorkshire, England, near Aysgarth Falls. It was part of the Hawes Branch of the North Eastern Railway from its opening in 1877 until closure in April 1954. The Wensleydale Railway Association aims to rebuild the railway from Northallerton (from its current western terminus at Redmire) to Garsdale and plans to re-open the station. History The station was opened by the North Eastern Railway on 1 February 1877. The line became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) during the Grouping of 1923. The station was host to a camping coach from 1935 to 1939 and could possibly have had a coach in 1933 and/or 1934. Aysgarth is a village and civil parish in Wensleydale, in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The village is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, about south-west of Richmond and west of the county town of Northallerton. History A Bronze Age burial has been found in the village. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as ''Echescard''. The toponymy is derived from the combination of the Old Norse words ''eiki'', meaning oak, and ''skarð'', which may mean open space, cleft or mountain pass, so the probable meaning is ''Oak tree cleft'', referring to the valley cut by the River Ure. The coaches were old passenger vehicles no longer suitable for use in trains, which were converted to provide sleeping and living space at static locations. Leeming Bar railway station is a railway station in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire, England. It is the eastern rail passenger terminus of the Wensleydale Railway, though the line continues towards . Trains are timed to link in with Dales and District service buses to Northallerton to connect with the National Rail network. History The station was opened by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (a constituent company of the North Eastern Railway) in 1848 as the terminus of their branch from Northallerton. Wensleydale Railway
The Wensleydale Railway is a heritage railway in Wensleydale and Lower Swaledale in North Yorkshire, England. It was built in stages by different railway companies and originally extended to railway station on the Settle-Carlisle line. Since 2003, the remaining line has been run as a heritage railway. Hawes railway station is a disused railway station that served the town of Hawes in North Yorkshire, England. It was closed in 1959 and now forms part of the Dales Countryside Museum. Since 2015, the museum has rented the building to a business operating a bike shop and later, also a cafe. History The station was opened in October 1878 by the Midland Railway (MR) as the terminus of their branch line from Hawes Junction. The MR branch made an end-on junction there with the North Eastern Railway (NER) line from Northallerton via Bedale which had been opened as far as Leyburn by 1856 and then extended onwards to Hawes in the summer of 1878. North Eastern Region Of British Railways
The North Eastern Region was a region of British Railways from 1948, whose operating area could be identified by the orange signs and colour schemes that adorned its stations and other railway buildings. It was merged with the Eastern Region in 1967. It was the near direct post-nationalisation descendant of the North Eastern Railway, that had merged with some other companies to form the LNER in 1923.
