Ayavalla Plantation was a quail hunting plantation located in northwest Leon County, Florida, established by John Henry Howard Phipps, son of John Shaffer Phipps of the prominent Phipps family. Ayavalla was the Indian word used by Ellen Call Long for Lake Jackson. Long was the previous resident of nearby Orchard Pond Plantation and daughter of Governor Richard Keith Call. Upon John Shaffer Phipps' death in 1958, Orchard Pond Plantation and were passed on to grandson Colin Phipps, and grandson John E. A quail hunting plantation is a large tract of land typically with a natural wooded and grass habitat for the purpose of recreational hunting of bobwhite quail. Range Quail hunting plantations are found throughout the Southern United States, from Texas to South Carolina, with a high concentration in southern Georgia and northern Florida, and it may also offer hunting of dove, pheasant, duck, deer, boar, and fishing. John Shaffer Phipps (August 11, 1874 – May 12, 1958) was an American lawyer and businessman who was an heir to the Phipps family fortune and a shareholder of his father-in-law's Grace Shipping Lines. He was a director of the Hanover Bank, U.S. Steel Corp. and W. R. Grace & Co. The Phipps family of the United States is a prominent American family that descends from Henry Phipps Jr. (1839–1930), a businessman and philanthropist. Orchard Pond Plantation
Orchard Pond Plantation was a large cotton plantation originally of 8754 acres, (35½ km2) developed and owned in the 19th century by Richard Keith Call, attorney, planter and future Territorial Governor, in what is now northwestern Leon County, Florida, United States. In 1860 he owned 118 slaves to work the 1300 acres of improved land. It was one of two plantations which Call owned in Leon County. His descendants owned these properties into the 20th century. Location The exact boundaries of Orchard Pond Plantation are not available. Orchard Pond lay between Lake Jackson and the Ochlockonee River to the west. Luna Plantation was a quail hunting plantation located in northeastern Leon County, Florida, United States established by Lloyd C. Griscom. Lloyd C. Griscom was the son of Clement A. Griscom from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Clement was a shipping magnate, President of the Red Star Line and American Line. Almost four years after the death of Clement A. Griscom, on October 19, 1916 Horseshoe Plantation was divided up and part sold. Lloyd C. Griscom, Clement's son received on the west side naming it Luna Plantation while his sister Frances C. Meridian Plantation
Meridian Plantation was a quail hunting plantation in central Leon County, Florida. It was established by Arthur Lapsley in 1915. Lapsley was from Pomfret Center in Pomfret, Connecticut. Meridian Plantation had previously been Mossview Plantation, and owned by the Whitehead family. In 1933, Meridian Plantation was purchased by Dwight F. Davis. Davis was Assistant Secretary of War under President Calvin Coolidge and Governor General of the Philippines from 1929-1932. Davis also founded the tennis world's prestigious Davis Cup. In 1945, Davis died with Meridian becoming the property of Griscom Bettle, nephew to Lloyd C. Griscom of Luna Plantation. Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park is an open natural park located in northern Tallahassee, Florida, United States and operated by the City Of Tallahassee. The property is owned by Northwest Florida Water Management District. History The land was originally used as farm land by the Seminole Indians and later became the cotton plantations Mossview Plantation established by Amos Whitehead and Meridian Plantation, a quail hunting plantation established by Dwight F. The Red Hills Horse Trials is held in Tallahassee, in the U.S. state of Florida and is one of the equestrian world's top events.
