Ayai
''Ayai'' ( km, អាយ៉ៃខ្មែរ) is one of the four main musical styles of Khmer traditional culture, along with ''pinpeat, mahori,'' and ''phleng khmer''. It can be more specifically defined as "repartee singing, usually the theatrical alternation of a man and a woman, accompanied by an ensemble of the same name." Along with '' smot'', while in a very different style, ''ayai'' singing has been described as "one of the most fascinating folk music traditions in Cambodia." History The ''Ayai'' art form originated from popular routines, like many other Khmer traditions. In the past, Cambodian people would perform traditional games - which often included singing and dancing - in their villages, most often during the Khmer New Year festival and other celebrations. Prum Manh
Prum Manh (Khmer; ព្រហ្ម ម៉ាញ) is a Cambodian comedian and ''ayai'' singer who survived the Khmer Rouge regime and currently has one of the longest careers as an actor in Cambodia along with Dy Saveth. Biography Prum Manh was born around 1950 from a family of ordinary peasants in the province of Kampong Speu. He has four male siblings with the first brother specializing in sculpture design, the second brother being a teacher and his youngest brother is a traditional Bokator boxer. Prum Manh was the only one in his family to start a career in the performing arts. He began his career as an Ayai performer during the Khmer Republic in 1970 at the age of 20. During the Khmer Rouge terror regime, all his family members were decimated leaving him alone. He lived in Toek Chor commune on the border of Banteay Meanchey province. Khmer Literature
Cambodian literature ( km, អក្សរសាស្ត្រខ្មែរ, ), also Khmer literature, has a very ancient origin. Like most Southeast Asian national literatures its traditional corpus has two distinct aspects or levels: *The written literature, mostly restricted to the royal courts or the Buddhist monasteries. *The oral literature, which is based on local folklore. Ching (instrument)
Ching (also spelled Chheng, km, ឈិង or Chhing, th, ฉิ่ง) are finger cymbals played in Cambodian and Thai theater and dance ensembles. Construction and use Joined by a cord that runs through the center, ching are bowl-shaped, about 5 centimeters in diameter, and made of bronze alloy—iron, copper, and gold. They are struck together in a cyclical pattern to keep time and regulate the melody, and they function as the "timekeeper" of the ensemble. The rhythm typically consists of alternating the accented closed stroke with an unaccented open "ching" stroke. The name "ching" is probably onomatopoeic for this open sound. Skor Daey
The skor daey (ស្គរដៃ "hand drum" or "clay drum") is a short goblet drum from Cambodia, approximately 40 centimeters tall and 15 centimeters wide at the top. There are two common goblet drums there, the skor chhaiyam (Khmer: ស្គរឆៃយ៉ាំ), a very long goblet drum, resembling some from Burma, and the skor daey. Alternative spellings in English include skor dai (hand) and skor dei (clay, also alternative in Khmer: ស្គរដី). Other Khmer names included skor arak, skor kar (ស្គរការ), skor ayai (ស្គរអាយ៉ៃ។). Khloy
A khloy ( km, ខ្លុយ, Burmese: ပုလွေ, ) is an ancient traditional bamboo flute from Cambodia and more specifically the Khmer people. The khloy and other similar bamboo flutes can be found throughout Asia, due to bamboo’s abundance in the region. The khloy is a duct flute and has two sizes: smaller, higher-pitched (''khloy ek'') and larger, lower-pitched (''khloy thomm''). It has six finger holes and a thumb hole, or seven finger holes and no thumb hole. A hole above the highest finger hole may be covered with a membrane made of rice paper or bamboo inner skin, similar to ''di mo''. Takhe
The ''chakhe'' (Lao language, Lao: ຈະເຂ້, , th, จะเข้, , also spelled ''jakhe'' or ''ja-khe''), or ''krapeu'' ( km, ក្រពើ; also called ''takhe'', km, តាខេ, ''takhe'', ''takkhe'' or ''charakhe''), is a fretted floor zither or lute with three strings used in Thai music, Thai and Khmer music. Spike fiddles have a handle that passes through the resonator, often forming a spike, on the bottom side where it emerges. The family is similar or distantly related to the Chinese erhu or  huqin. The instruments have a soundbox at the bottom of the stick, covered with leather or snake skin. Strings run from pegs at the top of the stick and secured at the bottom, running across the soundbox. The larger the soundbox, the lower the pitch range. Mor Lam
Mor lam ( Lao: ໝໍລຳ; Thai/Isan: หมอลำ ; ) is a traditional Lao form of song in Laos and Isan. ''Mor lam'' means 'expert song', or 'expert singer', referring to the music or artist respectively.
