Awbari Governorate
Awbari Governorate or Ubari Governorate ar, أوباري محافظة was one of the governorates (muhafazah) of Libya from 1963 to 1973. Its capital was the town of Ubari. It was created out of the southwestern part of Fezzan province Fezzan province is one of the three traditional Provinces of Libya. It was a formal province from 1934 until 1963, when it was subdivided into the Governorates of Libya. Its capital was the city of Sabha. In 1963, the province was split into: *A .... The governorates of Libya (''muhafazah'') were a tenfold top-level Subdivisions of Libya, administrative division of Libya from 1963 until 1983. They came into being on 27 April 1963. Helen Chapin Metz
Helen Chapin Metz (April 12, 1928 – May 13, 2011) was an American editor and Middle East analyst. Life Helen Chapin was born on April 12, 1928, in Peking, China. She was the daughter of diplomat Selden Chapin and Mary Paul Noyes. Her brother, Frederic L. Chapin, would also become a diplomat. She was educated at the Potomac School, the Madeira School, Vassar College, graduating in 1949, and the American University of Beirut. She married Rev. Ronald Irvin Metz on July 14, 1951, in The Hague, Netherlands. The couple settled in Washington, D. C., as they both had jobs in the federal government. Metz worked for the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, editing 15 Library of Congress Country Study handbooks. Ubari
Ubari or Awbari (Berber language: Ubari or Awbari; ar, أوباري, ‘Awbārī) is a Tuareg Berber–speaking oasis town and the capital of the Wadi al Hayaa District, in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya. It is in the Idehan Ubari, a Libyan section of the Sahara Desert. It was the capital of the former ''baladiyah'' (district) called Awbari, in the southwest of the country. Geography Ubari is in the Targa valley, lying between the Messak Sattafat plateau and Idhan Ubari erg sand dunes and lakes. Native plants include wetland grasses at the natural spring fed lakes' shorelines, and the native Saharan Date palm (''Phoenix dactylifera'') The Ubari oasis settlement is the second center for the Kel Ajjer Tuareg people, after Ghat. Fezzan Province
Fezzan province is one of the three traditional Provinces of Libya. It was a formal province from 1934 until 1963, when it was subdivided into the Governorates of Libya. Its capital was the city of Sabha. In 1963, the province was split into: *Awbari Governorate * Gharian Governorate * Sabha Governorate Administration Fezzan was a province under the Ottoman Turks and Italy, and a province (''wilayah'') or governorate (''muhafazah'') of independent Libya (alongside Tripolitania and Cyrenaica) until 1963. With the introduction of the new administrative division of Libya in 1963, Fezzan was abolished as an independent administrative unit and was divided into the ''muhafazat'' of Awbari and Sabha. In 1983, these administrative divisions were abolished in favour of smaller districts or ''baladiyah''.
