''Awaking the Centuries'' is the second full-length album by German symphonic metal band Haggard. It was released on 7 February 2000 by Drakkar Entertainment. The album is based on Michel De Nostredame (Nostradamus) and his experience during The Black Plague in Medieval Europe. The album features several compositions based on Sergei Rachmaninoff's music. ''Awakening the Centuries'' peaked at position 64 in the German album charts. Haggard () is a German symphonic metal band founded in 1989. The group combines classical music and early music with death doom metal. History Haggard was founded in 1989 and originally played death metal. They changed their musical style after their first demo tape, ''Introduction'' in 1992, becoming a band with symphonic melodies and classical instruments but folk themes. The album '' And Thou Shalt Trust... the Seer'' marked their breakthrough in 1997. After their second album '' Awaking the Centuries'' (the life of the prophet Nostradamus), they toured through Mexico twice. In 2004, they released their third album '' Eppur Si Muove'' which is about the life of Italian scholar Galileo Galilei, sentenced to house arrest for heresy by the Catholic Church for supporting Copernicus' claim that the Earth revolved around the sun. Death-doom
Death-doom is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It combines the slow tempos and pessimistic or depressive mood of doom metal with the deep growling vocals and double kick drumming of death metal. Drakkar Entertainment GmbH, also called Drakkar Records or Drakkar Publishing, is a German record label with its headquarters in Witten. It is a joint venture with Bertelsmann Music Group. History Originally Kopec Music Publishing, Drakkar Entertainment was founded in 1986 by Bogdan Kopec. Michel de Nostredame (December 1503 – July 1566), usually Latinised as Nostradamus, was a French astrologer, apothecary, physician, and reputed seer, who is best known for his book ''Les Prophéties'' (published in 1555), a collection of 942 poetic quatrains allegedly predicting future events. Nostradamus's father's family had originally been Jewish, but had converted to Catholic Christianity a generation before Nostradamus was born. He studied at the University of Avignon, but was forced to leave after just over a year when the university closed due to an outbreak of the plague. He worked as an apothecary for several years before entering the University of Montpellier, hoping to earn a doctorate, but was almost immediately expelled after his work as an apothecary (a manual trade forbidden by university statutes) was discovered. Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff; in Russian pre-revolutionary script. (28 March 1943) was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. The ''All-Night Vigil'' ( Pre-reform Russian: ''Всенощное бдѣніе'', ''Vsénoshchnoye bdéniye''; Modern Russian: ''Всенощное бдение'') is an a cappella choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninoff, his Op. 37, premiered on 23 March 1915 in Moscow. The piece consists of settings of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. It has been praised as Rachmaninoff's finest achievement and "the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church".
