Avramiou
Avramiou is a village in Messenia, southern Greece. It was built before 1816; it had 32 families then. During the Turkish occupation, it was a village of Koroni province, and became a village of Messini province and capital of Leukothea Municipality ( now defunct) in 1835. In August 1840, Avramiou became a village of Aristomenis Municipality; it was almost destroyed by earthquakes in 1846. The primary school of Avramiou was founded in 1860. Ten years after, Avramiou became the capital of Aristomeni Municipality. Today, it is a community of the municipality Messini. The community contains the villages Drakoneri, Agios Avgoustinos and Avramiou. In 2011, the population for Avramiou village was 334, and 466 for the community. Messini
Messini ( el, Μεσσήνη, before 1867: Νησί ''Nisi'') is a municipal unit (''dimotiki enotita'') and the seat town (''edra'') of the municipality (''dimos'') of Messini within the regional unit (''perifereiaki enotita'') of Messenia in the region (''perifereia'') of Peloponnese, one of 13 regions into which Greece has been divided. Before 2011 the same hierarchy prevailed, according to Law 2539 of 1997, the Kapodistrias Plan, except that Messenia was a ''nomos'' and the Municipal unit was a locality (''topiko diamerisma''). The ''dimos'' existed under both laws, but not with the same constituents. Messini (modern pronunciation) is not to be confused with its ancient namesake, Messene, located to the north in the shadow of Mount Ithome. Messenia
Messenia or Messinia ( ; el, Μεσσηνία ) is a regional unit (''perifereiaki enotita'') in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese region, in Greece. Until the implementation of the Kallikratis plan on 1 January 2011, Messenia was a prefecture (''nomos'') covering the same territory. The capital and largest city of Messenia is Kalamata. Geography Physical Messenia borders on Elis to the north, Arcadia to the northeast, and Laconia to the southeast. The Ionian Sea lies to the west, and the Gulf of Messinia to the south. The most important mountain ranges are the Taygetus in the east, the Kyparissia mountains in the northwest and the Lykodimo in the southwest. The main rivers are the Neda in the north and the Pamisos in central Messenia. Off the south coast of the southwesternmost point of Messenia lie the Messinian Oinousses islands.
