Avraham Bendori
Avraham Bendori (June 21, 1928 – January 15, 2019) was an Israeli footballer who played for Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Israel national team. He later worked as a manager. Career Bendori was born in Tel Aviv in 1928 and joined Maccabi Tel Aviv at the age of 13. He was part of the Maccabi Michael youth team, which won back to back youth championship in the mid-1940s. In 1946 he was promoted to the senior team and played with the team until the end of the 1959–60 season, winning 6 league titles and 6 cups with the club. Bendori was also a member of the Israel national football team, but only made a handful of appearances, as the main goalkeeper of the national team during this time was Ya'akov Hodorov. Bendori played in Israel's first match ever, against the U.S., but didn't make another appearance in an official match until 1958, when he started in two group phase matches of the 1958 Asian Games, as Hodorov was injured. Samson's Foxes
Samson's Foxes ( he, שועלי שמשון, ''Shu'alei Shimshon'') was an Israeli commando unit of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. It was part of the 54th Battalion (commanded by Zvi Zur) of the Givati Brigade. The unit participated in various battles on the southern front, including Operation GYS and the Battles of the Separation Corridor. Uri Avnery, later to become an outspoken advocate of Israeli-Palestinian Peace and a personal friend of Yasser Arafat, was a member of this unit and wrote a song called "Samson's Foxes" which was its unofficial anthem. The modern Givati brigade named its reconnaissance companies after the 1940s unit in 1983. The companies were consolidated into a reconnaissance battalion of the same name in 2001, once again subordinate to the Givati Brigade. The 1957–58 Liga Leumit season lasted from December 1957 until May 1958. Maccabi Tel Aviv won the title, whilst the club's Rafi Levi was the league's top scorer with 14 goals. 1955–56 Liga Leumit
The 1955–56 Liga Leumit season was the first edition of Liga Leumit, which had replaced Liga Alef as the top division of football in Israel and the 17th season of top flight football under the IFA. Maccabi Tel Aviv won the title. Avraham Levi from Beitar Tel Aviv and Michael Michaelov from Hapoel Tel Aviv were the league's joint top scorers with 16 goals each. 1953–54 Liga Alef
The 1953–54 Liga Alef season saw Maccabi Tel Aviv were crowned champions for the third successive time, whilst Eliezer Spiegel of Maccabi Petah Tikva was the league's top scorer with 16 goals. No clubs were relegated as the league was expanded to 14 clubs in the following season. Although league matches ended on 13 March 1954, the confirmation of the league's final standings was delayed, as a match between Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Petah Tikva, which was played on 26 December 1953 and ended with a 3–2 win for Haifa, was claimed to be fixed, to allow Maccabi Haifa to win. Eventually, on 10 January 1955, the IFA decided to replay the match in a neutral venue, Maccabi Haifa won the rematch 4–1 and secured their spot in the top division. 1951–52 Liga Alef
The 1951–52 season was the first edition of Liga Alef, which had replaced the Israeli League as the top division of football in Israel following a year-long hiatus. It took place between October 1951 to June 1952 and was contested by 12 clubs, the same ones which had played in the top flight during the 1949–50 season minus Maccabi Nes Tziona. Maccabi Tel Aviv won their second consecutive championship, whilst the two Rishon LeZion clubs, Hapoel and Maccabi were relegated. Maccabi Tel Aviv's Yehoshua Glazer was the top scorer with 27 goals. 1949–50 Israeli League
The 1949–50 season was the first and only edition of the Israeli League. It was the first season after independence in 1948, and the eleventh season of league football in what had been Mandatory Palestine. The season started on 28 May 1949 and ended on 24 June 1950, with the league played on the basis of two points for a win and one for a draw. Originally 14 teams were due to contest the league, the same line-up as the league for the abandoned 1947–48 season. However Hapoel HaTzafon Tel Aviv had disbanded and after failing to play their first three matches, the rest of the club's fixtures were cancelled and the league was contested by 13 clubs. The title was won by Maccabi Tel Aviv. 1947 Palestine Cup
The 1947 Palestine Cup ( he, הגביע הארץ-ישראלי, ''HaGvia HaEretz-Israeli'') was the fifteenth season of Israeli Football Association's nationwide football cup competition, and the last competed before the declaration of independence of Israel. The competition reverted to its previous format, of each round decided with a single match. Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Tel Aviv met at a tempestuous final, which was abandoned at the 88th minute, with Maccabi leading 3–2. After Beitar claimed scoring an equalising goal, which wasn't given, the crowd stormed the pitch and Beitar player Yom-Tov Menasherov took the cup and escaped the pitch with it undetected by the authorities. 1946 Palestine Cup
The 1946 Palestine Cup ( he, הגביע הארץ-ישראלי, ''HaGavia HaEretz-Israeli'') was the fourteenth season of Israeli Football Association's nationwide football cup competition. The defending champion, Beitar Tel Aviv was eliminated in the first round after losing twice to Maccabi Nes Tziona. Hapoel Tel Aviv had difficulties throughout the competition, losing a match in the first round to minnows Hapoel Givatayim, and barely making it through the next round against Maccabi Rehovot, finally crashing to Hapoel Rishon LeZion in the quarter-finals. Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Rishon LeZion met in the two-legged final, Maccabi winning both legs to obtain its 5th cup.
