Avoca, Ireland
Avoca () is a small town near Arklow, in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is situated on the River Avoca. The Avoca area has been associated with its copper mines for many years and the valley has been celebrated by Thomas Moore in the song " The Meeting of the Waters". The name of the song derives from the meeting of the Avonmore and Avonbeg rivers, about 3 kilometres from the village of Avoca. The song is said to have been written under a tree, the stump of which remains by the Meetings. Avoca is also famous for its handweaving, with Avoca Handweavers based there. Avoca has been used as a filming location for several films and television series. The BBC series ''Ballykissangel'' was filmed there. In 1967, Avoca was one of the locations used in the film ''Jules Verne's Rocket to the Moon'', and it was the setting for the comedy film ''Zonad'' which had a general Irish release in 2010. Zonad
''Zonad'' is a film by John Carney and Kieran Carney that premiered in July 2009 at the ''Galway Film'' Fleadh. The film went to general release in Ireland March 19, 2010. Premise An escaped convict fools a whole Irish village into thinking he's a visitor from outer space. Zonad, a strange visitor comes to the town of Ballymoran, is taken in by the Cassidy family and accepted by the locals as an extraterrestrial. His comfortable existence is spoiled when Bonad arrives to replace him. Unreleased short film version In 2003, John Carney co-wrote and co-directed an earlier version of ''Zonad'', a short film, with Kieran Carney and Tom Hall. Rathnew
Rathnew () is a village in County Wicklow, Ireland. Located south of the capital Dublin along the M11 between Dublin and Wexford, it is close to the county town of Wicklow, which is situated to the east. Education Rathnew is home to Gaelscoil Chill Mhantáin, an Irish language primary school, which was established in 1996. The school was Ireland's first inter-denominational primary school, and draws pupils from Rathdrum, Brittas and Newcastle, as well as Rathnew. Rathnew is also home to St Coen's National School, a co-educational national (primary) school which was formed following the amalgamation of a number of former/smaller schools in the area. As of 2019, it had over 270 pupils enrolled. The local secondary school is Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, which opened in September 2011.
