Avengers (EP)
''Avengers'' is the second EP from rock band Avengers. Released by White Noise Records in 1979 after the split up of the band, it was produced by musician Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols. It is also known as the ''White Noise EP'', a reference to the record label. The 1983 album ''Avengers'' features identical versions of "White Nigger" and "Corpus Christi", while there are different versions of the other two tracks. Avengers (band)
The Avengers are an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in San Francisco, California, United States. The band recorded an EP, '' We Are the One'' (1977), and after opening for the Sex Pistols worked with Steve Jones, but had not released an album before breaking up in 1979. After the breakup an EP with the Steve Jones-produced songs was released (''The Avengers''), and later an album, ''Avengers'', in 1983. Their lead singer, Penelope Houston, is also a folk singer who has a solo career. Since 1999 a number of other albums were released with studio and live tracks, and the band has come together for various occasions. White Noise Records
White Noise Records was a record label founded in Los Angeles in 1978 by artists Ronn and Louise Spencer, writers Nicole Panter and Jim Bickhart, attorneys Gordon Rubin and Peter Paterno, and publicist Bob Merlis. White Noise's first release was the 7" EP ''Live at Surf City'' (1978) by VOM, a short-lived punk ensemble led by notorious rock critic Richard Meltzer and featuring future Angry Samoans Gregg Turner and "Metal" Mike Saunders. The label's second release was ''Avengers'', a 1979 12" EP by the Avengers, produced by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols. The label closed in 1980, but was briefly revived in the 1990s by archivist Keith Bollinger, who released historic recordings by The Mutants, Rozz Rezabek, Young Canadians, and Rubber City Rebels. Steve Jones (musician)
Stephen Philip Jones (born 3 September 1955) is an English guitarist, best known as a member of the rock band Sex Pistols. Following the split of the Sex Pistols, he formed the Professionals with former bandmate Paul Cook. He has released two solo albums, and worked with Johnny Thunders, Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick, Bob Dylan and Thin Lizzy. In 1995, he formed the short-lived supergroup Neurotic Outsiders with members of Guns N' Roses and Duran Duran. Jones was ranked #97 in ''Rolling Stone''s 2015 list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Early life Jones was born in Shepherd's Bush, London, where he grew up with his young mother, who worked as a hairdresser, and his grandparents. We Are The One
''We Are the One'' is the first EP by the Avengers. It was released on Dangerhouse Records in 1977. It is sometimes known as the Dangerhouse EP, referring to the label that released it. It was recorded in October 1977 at Kitchen Sink Studio. The release had two different covers, with the first pressing having the "crucifixion" cover, while later pressings had the "target" cover. All of its songs are on the 1983 album ''Avengers''. The single was re-released on Frontier Records. The single was also included on ''Dangerhouse Volume One''. The EP marked the first time that a West Coast punk band had issued music on an independent label. Critical reception ''The Rough Guide to Rock'' called the songs "defiant anthems of self-realization." Robert Christgau considered "We Are the One" to be the "finest U.S. indie single of 1977." ''Avengers'' is a compilation album by the American punk group Avengers. It was released on vinyl in 1983 by CD Presents. It is the closest thing to a studio album the band has, although it was compiled by drummer Danny Furious from various recordings the band did in their three years of existence. The album includes some songs previously released, including all of the songs from the ''We Are the One'' EP, two songs from the ''Avengers'' EP (as well as other songs recorded during the EP's sessions) and both songs from the "Paint it Black" single. Re-releases The album has been re-released multiple times over the years. The first re-release came when the album was first released on cassette by CD Presents with two more tracks; the 1989 release on CD included the same bonus tracks. Penelope Houston
Penelope Houston (born December 17, 1958) is an American singer-songwriter best known as the singer for the San Francisco-based punk rock band the Avengers. She was raised in Seattle. In the mid-1970s she attended Fairhaven College in Bellingham, Washington. In 1977, Houston moved to San Francisco, attended the San Francisco Art Institute, and shortly after became the lead singer and songwriter for the Avengers. That band released one album, their eponymous debut in 1983. Following the group's demise in 1979, Houston moved first to Los Angeles to work in film and video with The Screamers and director Rene Daalder, then to England where she collaborated with Howard Devoto on his post-Magazine projects. Guitar
The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that typically has six strings. It is usually held flat against the player's body and played by strumming or plucking the strings with the dominant hand, while simultaneously pressing selected strings against frets with the fingers of the opposite hand.
