Aveiro Light
The Lighthouse of Praia da Barra, also known as the ''Aveiro Lighthouse'' ( pt, Farol de Aveiro/Farol da Praia da Barra), is an active lighthouse in the civil parish of Gafanha da Nazarﾃｩ, municipality of ﾃ考havo, in the Portuguese district of Aveiro. Situated on the coastal ''Praia da Barra'', at the southern margin of the Ria de Aveiro, it is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal, with a height of overseeing the barrier beach and exposed to Atlantic storms. It is open to the public and visits are held on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 17:00. ﾃ考havo () is a municipality located in the centre of Portugal. The population in 2021 was 39,239, in an area of 73.48 kmﾂｲ. The Municipality of ﾃ考havo includes four parishes and two cities: Gafanha da Nazarﾃｩ and ﾃ考havo (City). General information Several stories have been gathered as part of the popular history of this city: Traditionally, the local women — ''As ilhavenses'' — are famous for their great beauty. A lighthouse keeper or lightkeeper is a person responsible for tending and caring for a lighthouse, particularly the light and lens in the days when oil lamps and clockwork mechanisms were used. Lighthouse keepers were sometimes referred to as "wickies" because of their job trimming the wicks. Duties and functions Historically, lighthouse keepers were needed to trim the wicks, replenish fuel, wind clockworks and perform maintenance tasks such as cleaning lenses and windows. They were also responsible for the fog signal and the weather station, and played a major role in search and rescue at sea. Because most lighthouses are located in remote, isolated or inaccessible areas on islands and coastlines, it was typical for the work of lighthouse keeper to remain within a family, passing from parents to child, all of whom lived in or near the lighthouse itself.
