''Avataars: Covenant of the Shield'' is a three-issue comic book mini-series, published by Marvel Comics in 2000. The series is written by Len Kaminski and pencilled by Oscar Jimenez and Javier Saltares. Set in a sword and sorcery version of the Marvel Universe Earth, it features alternative versions of Marvel characters such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Doctor Doom, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Publication history ''Avataars: Covenant of the Shield'' was initially intended as a twelve-issue project featuring established Marvel characters in a fantasy setting, but the story was never published. Marvel was in financial trouble at the time, and a twelve-issue series was not considered viable, so the creative team instead produced a three-issue prologue to the main saga, in an unsuccessful attempt to generate sufficient interest in a longer story. Captain America
Captain America is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character First appearance, first appeared in ''#Golden Age, Captain America Comics'' #1 (cover dated March 1941) from Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who often fought the Axis powers of World War II and was Timely Comics' most popular character during the wartime period. Oscar Jimenez (comics)
Óscar Jiménez is a Spanish comic book artist, penciller and inker. Career Jimenez started out in 1993 inking Carlos Pacheco's pencils at Marvel UK and rapidly became well known in the American comic industry for his art on titles such as ''The Flash'', '' JLA'' and ''Contest of Champions II''. He commenced work on '' Avataars: Covenant of the Shield'' but, according to editor Tom Brevoort, "Oscar Jimenez fell apart halfway through the project, requiring us to bring in other diverse hands to finsih it up." The artist has recently returned to mainstream American comics work under the pseudonym Juan Barranco, filling in on ''Squadron Supreme''. He is currently doing work on Avatar's ''Gravel'' series as well as '' Chronicles of Wormwood: The Last Battle'', a mini-series being written by Garth Ennis. The Fantastic Four is a superhero team appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The team debuted in ''The Fantastic Four'' #1 ( cover dated Nov. 1961), helping usher in a new level of realism in the medium. Jack Frost is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in 1941 in '' U.S.A. Comics'' published by Marvel's 1940s forerunner Timely Comics, during the period fans and historians call the Golden Age of comic books. Publication history First appearing in '' U.S.A. Blue Diamond is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, debuting under the company's 1940s forerunner, Timely Comics. The character was created in 1941 by Ben Thompson, who also drew the first comic book adventures of Ka-Zar the Great and Citizen V for Timely, as well as the Masked Marvel for Centaur Publications and Dr. Frost for Prize Comics. Falcon (Samuel Thomas "Sam" Wilson) is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was introduced by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Gene Colan in ''Captain America (comic book), Captain America'' #117 (Sept. 1969), and was the first Black American superhero in mainstream comic books. Hawkeye (Clinton Francis "Clint" Barton) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.
