''Autographa californica'' multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) is a nucleopolyhedrovirus belonging to the family ''Baculoviridae''.It has a double-stranded DNA genome that is 133,894 base pairs in length with 155 ORFs. The virus forms occluded bodies called polyhedra each containing multiple virions. AcMNPV has been shown to infect more than thirty lepidopteran hosts from 10 families. The natural hosts of species in this family are invertebrates, among them winged insects ( Lepidopterans, Hymenopterans, Dipterans), and decapods. However, species in this genus have been isolated only from Lepidoptera. There are 56 species in the genus. ''Baculoviridae'' is a family of viruses. Arthropods, among the most studied being Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera, serve as natural hosts. Currently, 85 species are placed in this family, assigned to four genera. Baculoviruses are known to infect insects, with over 600 host species having been described. Immature (larval) forms of lepidopteran species (moths and butterflies) are the most common hosts, but these viruses have also been found infecting sawflies, and mosquitoes. Although baculoviruses are capable of entering mammalian cells in culture, they are not known to be capable of replication in mammalian or other vertebrate animal cells. Starting in the 1940s, they were used and studied widely as biopesticides in crop fields. Baculoviruses contain a circular, double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genome ranging from 80 to 180 kbp. In molecular biology, open reading frames (ORFs) are defined as spans of DNA sequence between the start and stop codons. Usually, this is considered within a studied region of a prokaryotic DNA sequence, where only one of the six possible reading frames will be "open" (the "reading", however, refers to the RNA produced by transcription of the DNA and its subsequent interaction with the ribosome in translation). Such an ORF may contain a start codon (usually AUG in terms of RNA) and by definition cannot extend beyond a stop codon (usually UAA, UAG or UGA in RNA).
