Autoclave (album)
''Autoclave'' is a posthumous compilation album by the indie math rock band Autoclave. The CD-only release compiles their two Mira/Dischord EPs (originally released as one 7″ and one 10″), their song from the Simple Machines Records ''Lever'' compilation 7″, plus the live favorite ''Paper Boy'' – a cover of the theme song from the video game of the same name. It was released by Dischord Records in 1997, and was later remastered at Silver Sonya Studios and reissued in 2002 by Dischord and Mira Records. A 12" vinyl LP version was released in 2019. Critical reception ''Maximumrocknroll'' wrote that "Christina’s voice is truly beautiful, the lyrics are so perceptive and thoughtful and her basslines remind me of Wire songs and Nikki’s and Mary’s chopped up guitars over it are a textural dream." Autoclave (band)
Autoclave was an American indie rock band, based in Washington, D.C. Their releases were on local label Dischord Records. Formed in the summer of 1990, the group consisted of vocalist and bassist Christina Billotte, lead guitarist Mary Timony, guitarist Nikki Chapman, and drummer Melissa Berkoff.Strong, Martin C. Paperboy (video Game)
''Paperboy'' is an arcade action game developed and published by Atari Games and Midway Games, and released in 1985. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called ''The Daily Sun'' along a suburban street on his bicycle. The arcade version of the game featured bike handlebars as the controller. The game was ported to many home systems beginning in 1986. A sequel for home computers and consoles, '' Paperboy 2'', was released in 1991. Gameplay The player controls a paperboy on a bicycle delivering newspapers along a suburban street which is displayed in a cabinet perspective (or oblique projection) view. The player attempts to deliver a week of daily newspapers to subscribing customers, attempts to vandalize non-subscribers' homes and must avoid hazards along the street. Brendan Canty
Brendan John Canty (born March 9, 1966, in Teaneck, New Jersey) is an American musician, composer, producer and film maker, best known as the drummer for the band Fugazi. In 2007, ''Stylus Magazine'' ranked Canty at #29 on the list of "50 Greatest Rock Drummers". Biography Early years, Rites of Spring Brendan Canty began playing drums at the age of 15, debuting in Washington DC Dischord Records band Deadline, one of the signature bands of the early DC hardcore scene in the summer of 1981. They recorded a demo at Inner Ear Studios that Fall, and from those sessions three tracks were used on the Dischord "Flex Your Head" compilation. After playing a number of shows through the following year, Deadline recorded one more session at Inner Ear in August 1982, just prior to disbanding. Mary Timony
Mary Bozana Timony (born October 17, 1970) is an American independent singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, and violist. She has been a member of the bands Helium, Autoclave and Wild Flag, and currently fronts Ex Hex. Timony's music is often heavy and dark, frequently using drones, beats, and modal melodies reminiscent of European Medieval music. She uses a number of alternate guitar tunings, most prominent of which is DADGAE. Her unique style has been cited as an influence amongst well respected and admired musicians such as Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz and many more. Biography Timony was born to James and Joan Timony of Washington, D.C., and raised in the neighborhoods of Glover Park and Wesley Heights. Christina Billotte
Christina Billotte is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, known for her involvement in the punk music scene in Washington DC, as a performer and organizer. She is included in Venus Zine's list ''The Greatest Female Guitarists of All Time''. Musical career Billotte and Melissa Berkoff initially began playing together in a Washington, DC band called Hazmat in 1989, but then joined up with Nikki Chapman and Mary Timony to form Autoclave in 1991. Autoclave became known for their math rock styling and released a single on the Diskord label - a joint effort between Dischord and K Records - before splitting up in 1991. In early 1991, Billotte and Washington, DC artist Jen Smith joined Pacific Northwest band Bratmobile (Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman) when they temporarily relocated to Washington, DC. ''Maximumrocknroll'', often written as ''Maximum Rocknroll'' and usually abbreviated as ''MRR'', is a not-for-profit monthly zine of punk subculture. Based in San Francisco, ''MRR'' focuses on punk rock and hardcore music, and primarily features artist interviews and music reviews. Op/ed columns and news roundups are regular features as well, including submissions from international contributors. By 1990, it "had become the de facto bible of the scene". ''MRR'' is considered to be one of the most important zines in punk, not only because of its wide-ranging coverage, but because it has been a consistent and influential presence in the ever-changing punk community for over three decades. Simple Machines
A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage (also called leverage) to multiply force. Usually the term refers to the six classical simple machines that were defined by Renaissance scientists: * Lever * Wheel and axle * Pulley * Inclined plane * Wedge * Screw A simple machine uses a single applied force to do work against a single load force.
