Austrian Brazilians (Portuguese: ''Austro-brasileiro, Austríaco brasileiro'') refers to Brazilians of full, partial, or predominantly Austrian ancestry, or Austrian-born people residing in Brazil. Brazil is home to the second largest German-Austrian population outside their respective nations, after the United States. German is the second most spoken language in the country. Diplomatic relations exist between the Republic of Austria and the Federative Republic of Brazil. Both nations are members of the United Nations. History The first official contact between Austria and Brazil occurred in November 1817 when Austrian Archduchess Maria Leopoldina of Austria arrived to Rio de Janeiro to marry Crown Prince (and future Emperor) Pedro I of Brazil. Maria Leopoldina became Empress of Brazil in 1822 and is also the mother of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. In 1825, Austria recognized the independence of Brazil from its separation from Portugal. In 1859, the first Austrian immigrants began arriving to Brazil. In 1871, Emperor Pedro II paid a visit to Austria during his first European tours and met with his cousin Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Otto Maria Carpeaux (March 9, 1900 – February 3, 1978), born Otto Karpfen, was an Austrian-born Brazilian literary critic and multilingual scholar. Career overview Carpeaux was born Otto Karpfen in 1900 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, to a Jewish family, and lived there until 1939. At the age of 20, he enrolled at the University of Vienna to study Law. In 1925, he received a PhD in letters and philosophy and began working as a journalist.
