Australian And New Zealand Diocese
The Diocese of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand (russian: Сиднейская и Австралийско-Новозеландская епархия, also Australian and New Zealand Diocese) is the diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in Australia and New Zealand headquartered in Sydney. History The first Russian Orthodox parish in Australia was St Nicholas Church (now St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral) founded in 1926 in Brisbane. The Australian diocese of the ROCOR was founded in 1946 with episcopal see at St Nicholas Church in Brisbane. In 1950 the episcopal see was moved to Sydney to the Ss Peter and Paul Cathedral. In 1994 the Korean Orthodox mission was subordinated to Australian and New Zealand diocese by decree of the Synod of Bishops. In February 2005, the diocese included parishes of Indonesia that are of Old Calendar or independent Churches. In 2012 a Pakistan mission was established. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (russian: Ру́сская Правосла́вная Це́рковь Заграни́цей, lit=Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, translit=Russkaya Pravoslavnaya Tserkov' Zagranitsey), also called Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia or ROCOR, or Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA), is a semi-autonomous part of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate). Bishop George (secular name Paul Macarius Schaefer; May 25, 1950, Belleville, Illinois) is bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, bishop of Canberra, vicar of the Australian and New Zealand Diocese, and former abbot of the Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, West Virginia. Biography Early life Paul Schaefer was born on May 25, 1950, in Belleville, Illinois to Francis and Claire Schaefer, a devout Catholic family of German descent. While attending a Roman Catholic elementary school, he attended mass daily, served as an altar boy and sang in the church choir. In 1968 he graduated from Catholic High School and then attended Southern Illinois University from 1968 to 1972. After graduating, he saw problems in the Roman Catholic Church; he stopped attending services and began to search for the truth, including in Buddhist and other eastern sources. Archbishop Gabriel (russian: Архиепископ Гавриил, secular name George Lvovich Chemodakov, russian: Георгий Львович Чемодаков; June 2, 1961, Sydney, Australia) is bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, archbishop of Montreal and Canada. Metropolitan Philaret (secular name Georgy Nikolayevich Voznesensky, russian: Георгий Николаевич Вознесенский; 22 March 1903 in Kursk, Russia – 21 November 1985 in New York City) was the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia from 1964 until his death on November 21, 1985. He was ordained a deacon in 1930 and a priest in 1931. He served in Harbin (1931-1947), Tryokhrechye (1947-1949), then again in Harbin (1949-1962). In 1945-1962 he was a cleric of the Moscow Patriarchate. In 1962, he left China for Australia, joining the ROCOR. Daniel of Erie (secular name Dmitry Borisovich Alexandrov, Дмитрий Борисович Александров; September 15, 1930 – April 26, 2010) was an American Russian Orthodox bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. Life He was born in 1930 in Odessa, Soviet Union. Due to anti-Communist family connections, Dmitry's father, Boris Alexandrov, decided to move the family to Zlatoust in the Ural Mountains in 1938. Within just a few months of the move, Boris was arrested and disappeared; it was later found out he was executed. Mrs. Alexandrov then moved her family back to Odessa. In 1944 they left westward with the fleeing German Army, and within two years found themselves living in the Alps. Thanks to family in the United States, the Alexandrovs were able to emigrate to America, and came to New York City in 1949.
