The Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) is a national motorcycle racing championship in Australia, organized by Motorcycling Australia. History The story of the Australian Superbike Championship begins in 1980, at a time in motorcycle sport when the premier road racing series globally was the 500cc Grand Prix world championship. The issue with 500s at that time was that manufacturer teams were investing large amounts of funding to develop their machines and riders to a level of sophistication that was far removed from what was commercially available to the public. This resulted in a very expensive racing programme, especially for privateers. The need for a road race series that offered ease of entry for national riders was evident - one that was open to all makes of production motorcycles, machines which required little modification and development from standard road going trim. Superbike Racing
Superbike racing is a category of motorcycle racing that employs highly modified production motorcycles, as opposed to MotoGP in which purpose-built motorcycles are used. The Superbike World Championship is the official world championship series, though national Superbike championships are held in many countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada. Superbike racing is generally popular with manufacturers, since it helps promote and sell their product, as captured by the slogan "Win on Sunday; Sell on Monday". Anthony Gobert
Anthony Gobert (born 5 March 1975 in Greenacre, New South Wales, Australia) is a former professional motorcycle road racer, nicknamed The Go Show. He was a rider of immense promise and talent who had his career derailed by a personal struggle with drug abuse. Winning the final leg of the 1994 season at Philip Island, he became the youngest ever World Superbike race winner at the age of 19 years old, a record that was improved by 18-year-old Yuichi Takeda at Sugo in 1996. Gobert won that race at Phillip Island from Pole and is still (2020) the youngest rider (19 years, 7 months and 26 days) to do that. Joshua Brookes (born 28 April 1983 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) is a professional motorcycle road racing, road racer with experience of Superbike and Supersport racing, both domestically and internationally. In 2020, he raced in the British Superbike Championship aboard a Ducati Panigale where he won his second British title, followed by a sixth finish in the 2021 championship. The Suzuki GSX-R1000 is a supersport motorcycle made by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 to replace the GSX-R1100 and is powered by a liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder, four-stroke engine although originally from 2001 to 2004. The Ducati 996 is a Ducati sport bike motorcycle made from 1999 to 2002, based upon the earlier 916. Model history From 1999, there were three different models of the 996: a base, or Biposto; the 996S with Öhlins suspension; the 996SPS (Europe only) which had a more powerful engine and less weight thanks to some titanium and carbon fibre parts. From 2001 the 996R replaced the 996SPS and featured the new Testastretta engine. There was also the 748, which offered less horsepower. The 996 had larger pistons, larger valves, a stronger crankshaft and crankcases ported from the 916 SPS. Steve Martin is a motorcycle road racer from Australia. He currently resides in Melbourne, Australia. He is the 2009 World Endurance Champion for YART (Yamaha Austria Racing Team), but is a veteran of the World Superbike Championship, and former champion of the Australian series. After success in trials, he started racing in his home Superbike Championship in 1990, initially on a factory Suzuki. Years on private bikes followed, but he later earned a Ducati ride. He led the 1998 standings until a crash at Phillip Island, but won the title in 1999.
