Australian Society Of Anaesthetists
The Australian Society of Anaesthetists is an association that seeks to further the best interests of anaesthesia and anaesthetists. History The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) was founded in 1934 by Geoffrey Kaye. It was established as a means to exchange ideas, for the distribution of memoranda on topics of anaesthetic interests, and to conduct inquiries relating to problems in the practice of anaesthesia in Australia. Mary Taylor Burnell (then Angel) was the first female member and the secretary of the South Australian Section of the Society in 1935. The ASA is now one of the largest and leading medical associations in Australia, delivering a range of services of the highest quality to members. Membership consists of specialist anaesthetist as well as registrar trainees and non-specialist medical practitioner anaesthetists. Geoffrey Kaye
Geoffrey Kaye (1903–1986) was an Australian anaesthetist. Early life and education Geoffrey Kaye was born Geoffrey Alfred Kornblum in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia in 1903, the son of Rosetta Levison and Alfred Kornblum. He was educated in England, and studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, graduating MBBS in 1926. As Resident Medical Officer at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital in 1927, he was assigned to anaesthetics and quickly developed an affinity for the practice. He was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist to the Alfred Hospital in 1930. At this time, he was one of a small number of full-time anaesthetists in Australia. Attempts at producing a state of general anesthesia can be traced throughout recorded history in the writings of the ancient Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese. The Renaissance saw significant advances in anatomy and surgical technique. However, despite all this progress, surgery remained a treatment of last resort. Largely because of the associated pain, many patients with surgical disorders chose certain death rather than undergo surgery.
