Australian National Netball Team
The Australia national netball team, also known as the Australian Diamonds, represent Netball Australia in international netball tournaments such as the INF Netball World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the Constellation Cup, the Netball Quad Series and the Fast5 Netball World Series. They have also represented Australia at the World Games. Australia made their Test debut in 1938. As of 2021, Australia have been World champions on 11 occasions and Commonwealth champions on 4 occasions. They are regularly ranked number one in the INF World Rankings. History Early years On 20 August 1938, at Royal Park, Melbourne, Australia defeated New Zealand 40–11. This was the first netball Test between Australia and New Zealand. Netball Australia is the main governing body for netball in Australia. It is affiliated to World Netball. It is responsible for organising and administrating the Australia national netball team, Suncorp Super Netball and the Australian National Netball Championships. It previously organised and administrated the Australian Netball League, the ANZ Championship, the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league and the Esso/Mobil Superleague. Netball Australia was originally founded in 1927 as the All Australia Women's Basket Ball Association. Constellation Cup
The Constellation Cup is an international netball competition contested by Australia and New Zealand. The competition features a series of test matches. The two teams have competed for the trophy since 2010. Australia won the inaugural series and have gone on to become the competition's dominant team. Between 2013 and 2019, Australia won the series on seven successive occasions. New Zealand won the trophy for the first time in 2012 and for a second time in 2021. Pat McCarthy (netball)
Pat McCarthy, also known as Pat Doherty, is a former Australia netball international. In 1956 she captained Australia when they toured England, Scotland and Ceylon. The tour saw Australia play against England for the first time. In 2014, McCarthy was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame. Playing career Australia McCarthy began playing for Australia in 1952. Initially she did not play in full internationals, but against Rest of Australia teams at inter-state sports carnivals. In 1956 McCarthy captained Australia when they toured England, Scotland and Ceylon. The team's head coach was Lorna McConchie. McCarthy made her senior debut for Australia on 11 February 1956 in a 22–12 win against Ceylon at St. Bridget's Convent, Colombo. During the tour Australia played against England for the first time. Myrtle Craddock
Myrtle Baylis (1 May 1920 – 23 September 2014), also known as Myrtle Craddock, was an Australia women's Test cricketer and an Australia netball international. In 1948 she made her debut for both national teams, just five months apart. Between 1948 and 1951 she played in six cricket tests for the Australia women's national cricket team. Between 1948 and 1954 she made three appearances for the Australia national netball team. In 1953 she also captained the Australia netball team. According to Netball Victoria, she was the first woman to represent Australia in two sports. Early life Baylis was the daughter of Johnny Craddock, who during the late 1910s and 1920s played Australian rules football for Western Bulldogs. His "bulldog tenacity" was said to have inspired the club nickname. Myrtle was raised in Sunshine, Melbourne and was still a resident of the suburb when she died in 2014. Netball In New Zealand
Netball is the most popular women's sport in New Zealand, in terms of player participation and public interest. With the national team, the Silver Ferns, currently ranked second in the world, netball maintains a high profile in New Zealand. Anne Clark (netball)
Anne Evelyn Clark was an Australian netball administrator, umpire and coach. Between 1950 and 1979 she served as President of the New South Wales Women's Basketball Association. Between 1955 and 1978, she also served five terms as President of the All Australia Netball Association. Clark umpired at the 1967 and 1975 World Netball Championships. In 1975 she was awarded the British Empire Medal and in 2009 was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame. Clark died on 12 June 1983 in Singapore while attending the 1983 World Netball Championships. She was cremated in Sydney. Early life, family and employment Clark was born on 16 August 1903 in Waterloo, Sydney. She was the third of five children. Her parents were George Cornelius Clark, a sewerage labourer, and his wife Martha (née Doidge). They were both originally from Victoria. Lorna McConchie
Lorna Jean McConchie (22 July 1914 – 9 December 2001) was a former Australia netball international and national team head coach. In 1938 McConchie played for Australia in their first international match against New Zealand. McConchie was later head coach when Australia won the inaugural 1963 World Netball Championships. In 2009 she was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame. Early life and education McConchie attended East Kew Primary School and University High School before studying physical education at the University of Melbourne. She subsequently became a lecturer at Melbourne and helped establish the university's physical education course. In 1949, she represented the Australian Physical Education Association at the first women's conference in Denmark. New Zealand National Netball Team
The New Zealand national netball team, commonly known as the Silver Ferns, represent New Zealand in international netball. The team take their nickname from the Silver Tree Fern (''Cyathea dealbata''), which is an emblem for many New Zealand sports teams. The Silver Ferns were formed in 1938 as a representative New Zealand team to tour Australia. To date, they have been one of the most dominant national netball teams in the world, along with Australia, and have a winning record against most other netball nations. The Silver Ferns are current world champions and ranked second in the INF World Rankings, behind Australia. INF World Rankings
The World Netball Rankings are published by the World Netball to make it possible to compare the relative strengths of internationally active national netball teams. Initially, rankings were based on the results from the World Netball Championships, and released after the conclusion of each event, every four years. A new ranking system was implemented on 11 February 2008, wherein teams are ranked based on international tests played, currently since July 2010. Teams appear on the rankings list once they have played eight international test matches, starting from July 2010. Australia and New Zealand have dominated the INF world rankings in previous years and they are the only two netball nations to have ever held the number one world ranking since its introduction in 2009.
