Australian Baseball League (1989-1999)
The Australian Baseball League (ABL) is a professional baseball league in Australia. The league is governed by the Australian Baseball Federation (ABF). It uses the same name as a now-defunct competition held during the 1990s, and though it shares some history of the original league with the Claxton Shield awarded to winners of both competitions, it is considered to be a separate competition. Because the ABL's season takes place from November to February, the ABL is one of baseball's recognised winter leagues (although it is summer in Australia when the season takes place), where minor-league prospects in North America are often assigned as an English-speaking alternative to the primary Spanish-speaking Latin America-based winter leagues. Tom Nieto
Thomas Andrew Nieto (born October 27, 1960) is an American former professional baseball catcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies. Nieto is formerly the manager of the Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Rochester Red Wings, the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate. He previously served in various coaching capacities for the New York Yankees and New York Mets. A native of Artesia, California, Nieto attended Gahr High School then went on to Oral Roberts University. Playing career The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Nieto in the third round of the 1981 amateur draft. Brad Byron Cornett (born February 4, 1969) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. Cornett played for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB) for parts of the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Cruz Gabriel Molina (born May 3, 1975) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) right-handed relief pitcher who played for the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, and St. Louis Cardinals between 1999 and 2003. Early life A native of Denver, Colorado, Molina attended Kennedy High School and Arizona State University. In 1994, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League, and returned to the league in 1995, to play for the Orleans Cardinals. Shayne Bennett
Shayne Anthony Bennett (born 10 April 1972) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for North Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), and was a right-handed baseball pitcher, who last played in Major League Baseball with the Montreal Expos on 15 August 1999. The youngest brother to fellow North Adelaide footballer Peter Bennett, Shayne was a leading junior footballer for North Adelaide and was drafted by Victorian Football League (VFL) team Collingwood at the 1989 VFL Draft with the 56th selection. Melbourne Monarchs
The Melbourne Monarchs were one of the foundation members of the original (now defunct) Australian Baseball League. History The Monarchs had their licence revoked after the 1990–91 championship following a controversial dispute with Australia Baseball League officials. The Monarchs were replaced in 1991 by the Melbourne Bushrangers. However the Footscray Football Club (now Western Bulldogs) purchased the Monarchs licence for the 1993 championship, In their first season back the Monarchs defeated Perth Heat 2 games to 0 at Perths home ground Parry Field to take out the 1993 ABL Championship. Ross A. Jones (born January 14, 1960) is an American former professional baseball shortstop. He played for the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, and Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). Amateur career A native of Miami, Florida, Jones attended Hialeah High School and played college baseball at the University of Miami. In 1979, Jones played collegiate summer baseball for the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). Batting .413, he was named the league's outstanding pro prospect, and led the Mets to the league title. Jones was inducted into the CCBL Hall of Fame in 2006. Bob Nilsson
Robert "Bob" Nilsson was the oldest of the four Nilsson brothers and one of the greatest relievers in the history of Australian baseball leagues. Bob's brother Dave Nilsson was the first Australian All-Star in MLB, his brother Gary Nilsson played in the minors and Ron Nilsson also played in Australia for one year. Bob's son Jay Nilsson began his minor league career in 2006. Bob Nilsson was the first Australian of the modern era to sign a professional contract with an MLB team, inking a deal with the Cincinnati Reds in 1978.
