Australian Association For Jewish Studies
The Australian Association for Jewish Studies (AAJS) is a scholarly organization in Australia that promotes academic Jewish Studies. AAJS was founded in 1987 and held its first annual conference that year in Melbourne. AAJS is Australia's national association for tertiary academics, Jewish educators, researchers, curators, students and others devoted to the study of any aspect of Jewish life, thought and culture. Since February 2017, the president of the association has been Professor Ghil'ad Zuckermann. The current vice-presidents are Dr Lynne Swarts (NSW) and Dr Anna Hirsh (Victoria). Ghil'ad Zuckermann
Ghil'ad Zuckermann ( he, גלעד צוקרמן, ; ) is an Israeli-born language revivalist and linguist who works in contact linguistics, lexicology and the study of language, culture and identity. Shalom College is a residential college located on the Kensington campus of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. The College was founded in 1973. Although it is run by Sydney's Jewish community and observes Jewish culture, the college is open to people of all religions, creeds and backgrounds. Australian Jewish Genealogical Society
The Australian Jewish Genealogical Society (AJGS) is an Australian non-profit organisation established to encourage and assist those with Jewish ancestry to research their family histories. It is dedicated to the collection, preservation and dissemination of genealogical information of particular relevance and interest to members of the Australian Jewish community. The Society was established in Sydney in 199A Victoria, Australia, Victorian branch was established in 1995, which incorporated in 1998. The Sydney Society represents member researchers in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. Australian Jewish Historical Society
The Australian Jewish Historical Society was founded in 1938 in Sydney. The first president was Percy J. Marks. At the first business meeting of the Society, the then-president of the Royal Australian Historical Society K. R. Cramp expressed the view that the chief object of the Society should be the encouragement of individual research. In 1939, the Society published the first issue of the ''Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal'' (initially known as the ''Australian Jewish Historical Society, Journal and Proceedings''). In 1949, a Melbourne branch was established, which was informally known as AJHS (Vic). This branch grew and eventually incorporated. There is no national executive, with the Sydney and Melbourne Societies being financially independent. The history of Jews in Australia traces the history of Australian Jews from the British settlement of Australia commencing in 1788. Though Europeans had visited Australia before 1788, there is no evidence of any Jewish sailors among the crew. The first Jews known to have come to Australia came as convicts transported to Botany Bay in 1788 aboard the First Fleet that established the first European settlement on the continent, on the site of present-day Sydney. There were 97,335 Australians who identified themselves as Jewish in the 2011 census, but the actual number is estimated to be 112,000. (An answer to the question on the census was optional.) The majority are Ashkenazi Jews, many of them Jewish refugees, including Holocaust survivors who arrived during and after World War II, and their descendants. Jan Láníček (born 1981) is a Czech historian who studies Czechoslovak Jewish history in the twentieth century and the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. He graduated from Palacký University Olomouc (2006) and received his doctorate from the University of Southampton (2011). Dvir Abramovich
Dvir Abramovich ( he, דביר אברמוביץ, russian: Двир Абрамович, born 1971) is an Israeli-Australian Jewish studies academic, columnist, and editor. Abramovich is the chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), a former division of B'nai B'rith in Melbourne, and director of the Program for Jewish Culture and Society at The University of Melbourne. Abramovich's areas of study are the Hebrew language, Israel and Holocaust studies. Career Education Abramovich attended Monash University where he earned his undergraduate degrees in Arts and Law.
