Australia competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States. Australia sent 417 athletes, 250 men and 167 women, to the Atlanta Games. Renita Maree Farrell-Garard (born 30 May 1972 in Townsville, Queensland) is a former field hockey player from Australia, who was a member of the Australian Women’s Hockey Team, best known as the ''Hockeyroos'', that won the gold medals at the 1996 and the 2000 Summer Olympics. She made her international debut in 1994, and co-captained the winning Atlanta side. She is married to Gerry Garard, father of Brendan Garard, a field hockey player who claimed the bronze medal at the men's competition in Atlanta, Georgia. James Tomkins (rower)
James Bruce Tomkins, (born 19 August 1965) is an Australian rower, seven-time World Champion and a three-time Olympic gold medalist. He is Australia's most awarded oarsman, having made appearances at six Olympic games (for three gold and one bronze medal); eleven World Championships (for seven world titles including one in each of the five sweep oar events); four Rowing World Cups (for two titles) and eighteen state representative King's Cup appearances – the Australian blue riband men's VIII event, (for fifteen victories, ten as stroke). Tomkins is one of only five Australian athletes and four rowers worldwide to compete at six Olympics. Liane Tooth
Liane Marianne Tooth, OAM (born 13 March 1962 in Sydney, New South Wales) is a retired field hockey forward, who twice won the gold medal with the Australian Women's Hockey Team, best known as the ''Hockeyroos'', at the Summer Olympics: in Seoul (1988) and in Atlanta, Georgia (1996). Tooth was the first female hockey player to compete in four Olympic Games (1984 to 1996). She began playing field hockey at school in Sydney. Since 1994 she has devoted much of her professional life to increasing sporting opportunities and physical activity, particularly for girls and women; for the Active Women unit of the WA Department of Sport and Recreation. Most recently she has been working for the same department as an Officiating and Coaching Consultant, helping to develop officials such as referees and judges, and coaches. Kate Starre (born 18 September 1971 in Armadale, Western Australia) is a former field hockey midfielder from Australia, who competed for her native country in three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1992 (Barcelona, Spain). She was a member of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, best known as the ''Hockeyroos'', that won the gold medals at the 1996 and the 2000 Summer Olympics. She is the head coach for Canterbury Ladies 1XI, in England, from the start of the 2017–18 season. In June 2018, Starre joined the Fremantle Football Club's AFL Women's team as a high performance manager. Danielle Roche OAM (born 25 May 1970 in Melbourne, Victoria) is a former field hockey player, who was a member of the Australian Women’s Hockey Team, commonly known as the "Hockeyroos", which won the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Personal Roche was born in Melbourne on 25 May 1970. She is the daughter of Ken Roche, who was a hurdler at the 1964 Summer Olympics and won two Commonwealth Games gold medals. Katrina Maree "Triny" Powell (born 8 April 1972 in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory) is an Australian field hockey player. She represented Australia in three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1996. Powell was a member of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, known as the Hockeyroos, that won the gold medals at the 1996 and the 2000 Summer Olympics. Nova Peris-Kneebone
Nova Maree Peris (born 25 February 1971) is an Aboriginal Australian athlete and former politician. As part of the Australian women's field hockey (Hockeyroos) team at the 1996 Olympic Games, she was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal. She later switched sports to sprinting and went to the 1998 Commonwealth Games and 2000 Olympic Games. She was elected to the Australian Senate at the 2013 federal election, after then Prime Minister Julia Gillard named her as a "captain's pick", installing her as the preselected Labor candidate over incumbent Labor senator Trish Crossin. She retired from the Senate in 2016. Born on 20 September 1972 in Maryborough, Queensland, Morris is a former field hockey defender, who was a member of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, best known as the ''Hockeyroos'', that won the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
