Australasia Davis Cup Team
The Australasia men's national tennis team represented Australia and New Zealand in Davis Cup tennis competition, and was governed by the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association. It competed from 1905 through 1922. Following 1922, the nations competed as: * Australia men's national tennis team (began 1923; historical records assumed by Australia) *New Zealand Davis Cup team (began 1924) History In October 1904 the New Zealand Tennis Association contacted Australian officials with a proposal to enter a combined team at the 1905 Davis Cup. This proposal was accepted in January 1905 when New Zealand reluctantly agreed to form a joint Australasian Lawn Tennis Association. The 1911 Davis Cup was played at Lancaster Park, where Australasia as the defending champion was challenged by the United States. 1907 International Lawn Tennis Challenge
The 1907 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the seventh edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. As defending champions, the British Isles team played host to the competition. After several years of more varied competition, only Australasia and the United States would challenge for the cup. Australasia won both ties, and became the third nation to win the cup. The ties were played at Worple Road (the former site of the All England Club) in Wimbledon, London, England from 13–24 July. New Zealand Davis Cup Team
The New Zealand men's national tennis team represents New Zealand in Davis Cup tennis competition and are governed by Tennis New Zealand. New Zealand currently compete in Group II of the Asia/Oceania Zone. They have played in the World Group on 8 occasions, the most recent of which was in 1991. They reached the semifinals in 1982. History New Zealand competed in its first Davis Cup in 1924. Prior to 1914, New Zealand competed together with Australia as Australasia. Australasia won the Davis Cup in 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911 and 1914. Anthony Wilding was the only New Zealander to play for Australasia, and he was part of the winning team in 1907, 1908, 1909 and 1914. Maurice McLoughlin
Maurice Evans McLoughlin (January 7, 1890 – December 10, 1957) was an American tennis player. Known for his powerful serve, overhead, and volley, McLoughlin was the first male tennis champion from the western United States. Biography He was born on January 7, 1890, in Carson City, Nevada. At the U.S. Championships, he won the singles twice, 1912 and 1913, and the doubles three times with Thomas Bundy, 1912-1914. In 1913 he also became the first American to be a finalist in the singles at Wimbledon when he defeated Stanley Doust in the final of the All-Comers tournament. He lost the Challenge Round in straight sets to defending champion Anthony Wilding. The "California Comet" was the World No. 1 player for 1914. He married Helen Mears in 1918 and they had three children. He died on December 10, 1957, in Hermosa Beach, California. Alfred Dunlop
Alfred Wallace Dunlop (12 January 1875 – 6 May 1933) was an Australian tennis player, born in Christchurch, New Zealand. He won the doubles title at the Australasian Championships, the future Australian Open, alongside Fred Alexander in 1908. William Larned
William Augustus Larned (December 30, 1872 – December 16, 1926) was an American tennis player who was active at the beginning of the 20th century. He won seven singles titles at the U.S. National Championships. Biography Larned was born and raised in Summit, New Jersey on the estate of his father, William Zebedee Larned, a wealthy lawyer and a major landowner in Summit. Stoneover, the manor house in which he grew up, today houses the administrative and faculty offices of the Oak Knoll School. Larned Road in Summit honors both father and son; Brayton School in Summit was named in honor of his younger brother Brayton, who died at age 15. Rodney Heath
Rodney Wilfred Heath (15 June 1884 – 26 October 1936) was an Australian tennis player. Personal Heath was the second son of F. W. Heath who was the official timekeeper at the Victorian Racing Club and Victorian Amateur Turf Club. Rodney's brother C. V. Heath won the South Australian men's singles title in 1902. In June 1915 Heath left Australia to join the Royal Flying Corps in England. He was promoted to the rank of major two years later. In 1916 Heath was injured when he crash-landed his plane after flying into a snowstorm en route from England to France. Tennis career Heath was the Men's Singles champion at the inaugural Australasian Championships in 1905 defeating Albert Curtis in four sets. He won again it five years later, in 1910, after a victory in the final against Horace Rice in three straight sets. Beals Wright
Beals Coleman Wright (December 19, 1879 – August 23, 1961) was an American tennis player who was active at the end of the 1890s and early 1900s. He won the singles title at the 1905 U.S. National Championships. Wright was a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and the older brother of American tennis player Irving Wright. Biography Beals was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 19, 1879 to George Wright, the shortstop for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and founder of the sporting goods store Wright & Ditson. Beals was the brother of Irving Wright, the 1917 and 1918 U.S. Championship men's doubles champion. The United States men's national tennis team represents the United States in Davis Cup tennis competition, and is governed by the United States Tennis Association. The U.S. competed in the first Davis Cup in 1900, when a group of Harvard University students challenged the British. They are the most successful Davis Cup team ever to compete in the Davis Cup, winning the coveted Davis Cup title on 32 separate occasions closely followed by Australia on 28. Christchurch City Libraries is operated by the Christchurch City Council and is a network of 21 libraries and a mobile book bus. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake the previous Christchurch Central Library building was demolished, and was replaced by a new central library building in Cathedral Square, ''Tūranga'', which opened in 2018. Lancaster Park
Lancaster Park, also known as Jade Stadium and AMI Stadium for sponsorship reasons, was a sports stadium in Waltham, a suburb of Christchurch in New Zealand. The stadium was closed permanently due to damage sustained in the February 2011 earthquake and subsequently demolished in 2019. It was reopened in 2022. The stadium had been the venue for various sports including rugby union, cricket, rugby league, association football, athletics and trotting. The 1905 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the fifth edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. As defending champions, the British Isles team played host to the competition. The World Group ties were played at Queen's Club in London, England from 13–19 July, and the final was played on 21–24 July. Britain retained the Cup for their third championship. Teams Australasia, a combined Australia-New Zealand team, and Austria joined the competition for the first time. The United States returned after a 1-year hiatus, and France would return for their second year.
