Austin Pioneers
The Austin Pioneers were a minor league baseball team based in Austin, Texas from 1947 to 1955. The Pioneers were founding members of the Class B level Big State League, qualifying for the playoffs in five seasons and hosting home games at Disch Field. The Pioneers were preceded by the 1915 Austin Representatives and succeeded by the 1956 Austin Senators. History Preceded in Austin by the Austin Senators, the Austin Pioneers were founded, owned and operated by Edmund P. Knebel, a local bottler of 7-Up and Nu-Grape soft drinks. Knebel had Disch Field constructed for the Pioneers. Knebel sold the team after the 1955 season, when the franchise moved to the Texas League and renamed the Austin Senators. The Pioneers began play in the Big State League in 1947, joining the Gainesville Owls, Greenville Majors, Paris Red Peppers, Sherman–Denison Twins, Texarkana Bears, Waco Dons and Wichita Falls Spudders as charter members. Colorado River
The Colorado River ( es, Río Colorado) is one of the principal rivers (along with the Rio Grande) in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Tex Hughson
Cecil Carlton Hughson, (February 9, 1916 – August 6, 1993) was a Major League Baseball starting pitcher who played his entire career in the American League with the Boston Red Sox (1941–44, 1946–49). He batted and threw right-handed. A native of Kyle, Texas, Hughson played collegiately at the University of Texas at Austin. He was a successful and competitive major league pitcher who was not averse to throwing close to batters, changing speeds by mixing a hard fastball with an overhand curveball. At the height of his career, arm and shoulder injuries threatened permanent disability and hastened his retirement. Hughson enjoyed his best season in 1942, posting a 22–6 record with a 2.59 earned run average, ERA, and also leading the league in win (baseball), victories, strikeouts (113), complete games (22), innings pitched (281.0) and at bat, batters faced (1150). George Estock
George John Estock (November 2, 1924 – November 7, 2010) was an American professional baseball pitcher who spent one season () of his 13-year career in Major League Baseball with the Boston Braves. Born in Stirling, New Jersey, he threw and batted right-handed, stood tall and weighed . Estock graduated from Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1942 and was pitching in a summer league afterward when baseball scouts began to notice him. Soon, the Scranton Red Sox offered him $100 a month and a $100 signing bonus to play ball. Prior to the 1944 season, the parent Boston Red Sox sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies' organization, and in March 1946 Estock was traded to Pittsburgh Pirates to complete an earlier deal. John André (baseball)
John Edward André (January 3, 1923 – November 25, 1976) was a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs in the 1955 season. Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, the Filipino-American André was signed by the New York Giants as an amateur free agent in 1946. He languished in the minor leagues for years before being purchased by the Cubs from a club in Shreveport. André made his major league debut at the unusually advanced age of 32 on April 16, 1955, and went on to appear in 22 games, including 3 starts.
