Austin Lewis (footballer)
Austin William "Goosey" Lewis (26 May 1870 – 19 September 1937) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and Victorian Football League (VFL). He played in the 1900 premiership under the captaincy of Dick Wardill. Football Lewis made his VFL debut against in round 1 of the 1897 VFL season at the Lake Oval, having played 113 matches (eight for Richmond and 105 for Melbourne) in the VFA. Lewis retired in 1903 after 87 VFL games, for a career total of exactly 200. His 192 games for Melbourne included the club's 1900 Grand Final win, and was the club record until it was broken by Percy Beames in Round 14, 1943. Richmond is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Percy Beames
Percy James Beames (27 July 1911 – 28 March 2004) was an Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as first-class cricket for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. He later became one of Melbourne's most distinguished sports journalists, covering cricket and Australian rules football for ''The Age'' until 1976. When the Australian Football Hall of Fame was established in 1996, Beames was among the inaugural inductees, and was also named in the forward pocket when Melbourne's Team of the Century was named in June 2000. 1897 VFL Season
The 1897 VFL season was the inaugural season of the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL), the new highest-level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 8 May until 4 September, and comprised a 14-game home-and-away season followed by a 1897 VFL finals series, finals series featuring the top four clubs.
