Hundvåkøy Chapel
Hundvåko or Hundvåkøy is an island in Austevoll municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies southeast of the island of Stora Kalsøy and northwest of the large island of Huftarøy. There are bridge connections to both of those islands. The main population centres on Hundvåko are the villages of Austevollshella and Toranger. The island has a population (in 2001) of 554 inhabitants. The island is rocky and barren with few forested areas and much heathland. There are flocks of wild spælsau sheep that live year-round on the island in the heathland. This breed of sheep has roamed on the island since Viking times. Storebø is the administrative centre and largest village in Austevoll municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern part of the island of Huftarøy, just south of the village of Birkeland and northwest of the village of Haukanes. The village has a population (2019) of 1,588 and a population density of . History The Austevoll Church, the main parish church in Austevoll municipality, was historically located in the village of Austevoll on the island of Hundvåko until 1891 when it was moved and rebuilt at Storebø. Storebø was made the administrative centre of the municipality in 1964. Austevoll Church
Austevoll Church ( no, Austevoll kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Austevoll Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Storebø. It is one of the five churches for the Austevoll parish which is part of the Fana prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1890 using plans drawn up by the architect Hans Heinrich Jess (1847-1916). The church seats about 400 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1306, the church was not new that year. The first church in Austevoll was a wooden stave church built on the small island of Sandtorv, probably during the late 1200s. Austevoll is a municipality and an archipelago in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Midthordland in Western Norway. The administrative centre is the village of Storebø on the island of Huftarøy.
