Aulis (ancient Greece)
Aulis ( grc, Αὐλίς) was a Greek port-town, located in ancient Boeotia in central Greece, at the Euripus Strait, opposite of the island of Euboea. Livy states that Aulis was distant from Chalcis. Aulis never developed into a fully independent polis, but belonged to Thebes (378 BC) and Tanagra respectively.Xenophon, ''Hellenica'' iii According to legend (The ''Iliad'') the Greek fleet gathered in Aulis to set off for Troy. However, the departure was prevented by Artemis, who stopped the wind to punish Agamemnon, who had killed a deer in a sacred grove and boasted he was the better hunter. Avlida
Avlida ( el, Αυλίδα, ) or Aulis () a former municipality in Euboea regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Chalcis, of which it is a municipal unit. The population was 9,300 inhabitants at the 2011 census, and the land area is 122.235 km². The seat of the municipality was in Vathy. Although part of the Euboea regional unit, it is not located on the island Euboea, but on the mainland, attached to the northeastern part of Boeotia. Etymology Though the original etymology and meaning are "uncertain", the name ''Ogyges'' may be related to the Greek Okeanos (Ὠκεανός), the Titan who personified the great world ocean. The Greek word ''Ogygios'' (Ὠγύγιος), meaning ''Ogygian'', came to mean "primeval, primal," or "from earliest ages" and also "gigantic". Family Stories of Ogyges's descent differs widely.
