Augusts Voss
Augusts Voss ( rus, Август Эдуардович Восс; 30 October 1919, Saltykovo – 10 February 1994, Moscow) was a Soviet politician of Latvian people, Latvian origin and party functionary. Before World War II he worked as a school teacher. In 1940, he was mobilized into the Red Army and served as a Political commissar, politruk. From 1945, he served as a party apparatchik in Latvia. From 1966 till 1984, he was First Secretary (later: General Secretary) of the Communist Party of Latvia and member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1971 till 1990. From 1984 till 1989, he was Chairman of the Soviet of Nationalities, upper chamber of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. He did not return to Latvia and died in Moscow in 1994, where he is also buried. Secretary is a title often used in organizations to indicate a person having a certain amount of authority, power, or importance in the organization. Alfrēds Rubiks
Alfrēds Rubiks (russian: Альфред Петрович Рубикс, ''Alfred Petrovich Rubiks''; born 24 September 1935, in Daugavpils), is a Latvian communist politician and a former leader of the Communist Party of Latvia. He was a Member of the European Parliament for Latvia from 2009 until 2014. In the European Parliament he was a member of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left group. Due to his former allegiance with the Communist Party of Latvia after January 1991, Rubiks is prohibited from running for an electable office in Latvia under Latvian law. His two sons Artūrs Rubiks and Raimonds Rubiks are also politicians and members of the Saeima for Harmony.
