August Leopolder
August Leopolder (6 July 1905 – 31 August 2006) was a German pianist and piano pedagogue. Life Born in Munich, Leopolder was a student of Carl Adolf Martienssen and Egon Petri. During the Second World War, he first taught in Aschaffenburg, then from March 1941 on at the Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt under the direction of Kurt Thomas. From 1950, he was professor at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, where he also served as senate member and dean of the (then) department of artistic education. On the occasion of his 100th birthday he was awarded the dignity of Honorary Senator of the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt. In a press release of the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main he is described as "a real Bavarian personality with a rough skin and some rough edges but with a soft core". Carl Adolf Martienssen
Carl Adolf Martienssen (6 December 1881 – 1 March 1955) was a German pianist and music educator. Life Born in Güstrow, Martiensen came from a large farming family, which apparently only immigrated to Mecklenburg in the generation of his father, the merchant ''Gottlieb Martienssen''. Martienssen was a younger son of his parents, attended the and received his first music education in theory, organ and piano from Johannes Schondorf in his home town. Egon Petri
Egon Petri (23 March 188127 May 1962) was a Dutch pianist. Life and career Petri's family was Dutch. He was born a Dutch citizen but in Hanover, Germany, and grew up in Dresden, where he attended the Kreuzschule. His father, a professional violinist, taught him to play the violin. While still a teenager, Petri played with the Dresden Court Orchestra and with his father's string quartet. He studied composition and theory with Hermann Kretzschmar and Felix Draeseke at the Dresden Conservatory. From an early age Petri had also taken piano lessons and eventually, with strong encouragement from Ignacy Jan Paderewski and Ferruccio Busoni, he concentrated on piano. He studied with Busoni, who greatly influenced him, and Petri considered himself more a disciple than a student of his. Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt
The Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt was an educational institution leading to a university entrance qualification within the framework of the National Socialist Education System. It was founded in 1939 as the first ''Musisches Gymnasium'' of the then Greater German Reich at Adolf Hitler's request and closed after the end of the Second World War in 1945. The school was under the direct supervision of the Reich Ministry of Science, Education and Culture, and the city of Frankfurt was the school authority. It became known under its director Kurt Thomas. Kurt Thomas (composer)
Kurt Georg Hugo Thomas (25 May 1904 – 31 March 1973) was a German composer, conductor and music educator. Life Thomas was born in Tönning. The family lived from 1910 in Lennep where he attended the from 1913 to 1922. Completing with the Abitur on 21 April 1922, he studied law and music at the Leipzig University. He completed his studies in 1925 and worked as a lecturer of music theory at the Landeskonservatorium der Musik zu Leipzig. He composed a Mass in A minor as his Op. 1, which earned him the Beethoven Prize of the Preußische Akademie der Künste in 1927. Initiated by Karl Straube, he was appointed a teacher of composition and leader of the Kantorei (chorale) of the (Institute of church music). The Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (german: Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main, italic=no, link=no, HfMDK) is a state Hochschule for music, theatre and dance in Frankfurt and is the only one of its kind in the Federal State of Hesse. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (german: Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or , BVO) is the only federal decoration of Germany. It is awarded for special achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual or honorary fields. It was created by the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss, on 7 September 1951. Colloquially, the decorations of the different classes of the Order are also known as the Federal Cross of Merit (). It has been awarded to over 200,000 individuals in total, both Germans and foreigners.
