August Klotz
August Klett, or Klotz (1866–1928), was a German outsider artist with schizophrenia and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work ''Artistry of the Mentally Ill''. The pseudonym August Klotz (''Klotz'' being a disparaging term for a person of low intelligence) was given by Prinzhorn.Krannert Art Museum 1984, p. 11 He was born in Heilbronn. His father was a prosperous Swabian merchant, and Klotz worked in his father's business as a wine and champagne salesman for many years. Aside from a case of gonorrhea, he was healthy until an attack of influenza in 1903. After his illness he fell into a deep depression in which he heard hallucinatory voices insulting him. Outsider Art
Outsider art is art made by self-taught or supposedly naïve artists with typically little or no contact with the conventions of the art worlds. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. The term ''outsider art'' was coined in 1972 as the title of a book by art critic Roger Cardinal. It is an English equivalent for ''art brut'' (, "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created in the 1940s by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Roger Cardinal (art Historian)
Roger Cardinal was a professor at the University of Kent at Canterbury, England, and an art scholar who originated the term "outsider art". Career He studied at St Dunstan's College in south London and attended Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge as an undergraduate. His PhD, also at Cambridge, was on the surrealist conception of love. In 1965 he became an assistant professor in the French department of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. After a stint as a university lecturer at Warwick University, he moved to the University of Kent at Canterbury. Contributions He was the author of books including ''Surrealism: Permanent Revelation'' (1970, with Robert Short) and ''Outsider Art'' (1972), and was professor of literary and visual studies at the University of Kent. Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by continuous or relapsing episodes of psychosis. Major symptoms include hallucinations (typically hearing voices), delusions, and disorganized thinking. Other symptoms include social withdrawal, decreased emotional expression, and apathy. Symptoms typically develop gradually, begin during young adulthood, and in many cases never become resolved. There is no objective diagnostic test; diagnosis is based on observed behavior, a history that includes the person's reported experiences, and reports of others familiar with the person. To be diagnosed with schizophrenia, symptoms and functional impairment need to be present for six months (DSM-5) or one month (ICD-11). Many people with schizophrenia have other mental disorders, especially substance use disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and obsessive–compulsive disorder.
