August Hugo Vogel (1862–1930) was vice-president of Pfister & Vogel leather tannery of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additional involvement He was president of the Milwaukee University School, chairman of the board of trustees of Milwaukee-Downer College, a director and vice-president of the Visiting Nurse association, a trustee and former president of St. Johns Home for the Aged, and senior warden and treasurer of the endowment fund of St. James Episcopal church. He was a charter member and first president of the University Club of Milwaukee. He was one of the "industrial leaders of the nation" and attended conferences that lead to the creation of the United States Chamber of Commerce. Tanning is the process of treating Skinning, skins and Hide (skin), hides of animals to produce leather. A tannery is the place where the skins are processed. Tanning hide into leather involves a process which permanently alters the protein structure of skin, making it more durable and less susceptible to decomposition and coloring. Before tanning, the skins are dehaired, degreased, desalted and soaked in water over a period of six hours to two days. Historically this process was considered a noxious or "odoriferous trade" and relegated to the outskirts of town. Vogel State Park
Vogel State Park is a or 94 hectares state park located at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest. It became one of the first two parks in Georgia when it founded a state park system in 1931. Much of the park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. The park features streams, a waterfall, and Lake Trahlyta. At elevation it is one of Georgia's highest altitude state parks. Frederick Vogel
Friedrich Vogel (May 8, 1823 – October 23, 1892), more commonly known by the Americanized version of his name as Frederick Vogel, Sr., was an American tanner and businessman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who spent a single one-year term as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Together with his cousin Guido Pfister, he founded the Pfister & Vogel tannery. Background Vogel was born in Kirchheim unter Teck in the Kingdom of Württemberg on May 8, 1823, son of Johann Michael Vogel, a tanner. He received an academic education, and went into the family trade. In 1848, Vogel's cousin, Jacob F. Schoellkopf, asked him to leave Württemberg and join him in the United States. He lived for a while in Buffalo, New York and eventually Vogel, bankrolled by Schoellkopf, settled in Milwaukee and opened a tannery in collaboration with his other cousin, Guido Pfister, who kept a leather goods store. Pfister & Vogel
Pfister & Vogel (P&V) was an American tannery business in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Frederick Vogel emigrated from Wurtemberg, Germany to Milwaukee. In 1848, he founded a tannery on Milwaukee's Menominee River. Having also emigrated from Wurtemberg in 1845, Vogel's cousin Guido Pfister opened a shoe store on nearby West Water Street. They joined forces as the Pfister & Vogel Leather Company in 1853, and their company thrived, becoming one of the largest leather producers in the country. August H. Vogel was vice-president of the company until his death. The company changed hands several times. Its last owners, U.S. Leather Company, shut it down in 2000. The original Pfister & Vogel campus on Water Street in Downtown Milwaukee was demolished and the site cleaned and prepared for development in 2007.
