August Greene
August Greene is an American supergroup. The brainchild of rapper Common, and producers Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins, it was formed in 2018 after sharing the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for their song "Letter to the Free", which was part of Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary '' 13th'' (2016). The trio made their live debut on January 26, 2018 at New York’s Highline Ballroom as part of Glasper’s sixth annual Grammy Awards party, and released a eponymous joint album on March 9 through Amazon Music. The album was preceded by the single "Optimistic", a Sounds of Blackness cover featuring singer Brandy. On February 21, 2018, August Greene performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Robert Glasper
Robert Andre Glasper (born April 6, 1978) is an American pianist, record producer, songwriter, and musical arranger with a career that bridges several different musical and artistic genres, mostly centered on jazz. To date, Glasper has won four Grammy Awards and received nine nominations across eight categories. Glasper's breakout crossover album, ''Black Radio,'' won the 2013 Grammy for best R&B album, and following this success he performed on various successful albums, including playing keyboards on Kendrick Lamar's ''To Pimp a Butterfly'' and winning another Grammy for the track “ These Walls”. The ongoing Black Radio series of albums has since become Glasper's calling card, with guests such as Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Bilal, Ledisi, Lupe Fiasco, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu. Tiny Desk Concerts is a video series of live concerts hosted by NPR Music at the desk of ''All Songs Considered'' host Bob Boilen in Washington, D.C. The first Tiny Desk Concert came about in 2008 after Boilen and NPR Music editor Stephen Thompson left South by Southwest frustrated that they couldn't hear the music over the crowd noise. Thompson joked that the musician, folk singer Laura Gibson, should just perform at Boilen's desk. A month later Boilen arranged for her to do just that, making an impromptu recording and posting it online. The name is taken from Boilen's 1970s psychedelic dance band called Tiny Desk Unit.
