Audriņi
Audriņi (also Audreņi, ) is a village and the center of Audriņi Parish, Rēzekne Municipality of the Latgale area of eastern Latvia, 245 km east of Riga. It is situated on the banks of the Liužonka River along route P36. The parish council building, a primary school, cultural center, library, medical station and a Latvijas Pasts, Latvian Post office are present in this village. On the outskirts of the village, an AN/FPS-117, AN/TPS-77(V) air search radar of the Latvian Air Force was built in 2004. History The tragedy during World War II The village of Audriņi was completely eradicated and its entire population was liquidated on 3 January 1942 by the Nazi occupation authorities. In total 215 inhabitants were killed, including 51 children; later, on 4 January 1942, 30 of them were shot on the market square in Rēzekne; the others in the Ančupāni hills. Latvian Air Force
Latvian Air Force ( lv, Latvijas Gaisa spēki) is the aviation branch of the National Armed Forces. The first air force (AF) units were established 1992. It has no air combat capability, thus the defense of Latvian air space is maintained by NATO, with rotating detachments of four aircraft to Lithuania at four-monthly intervals (see Baltic Air Policing). Rēzekne Municipality ( lv, Rēzeknes novads) is a municipality in Latgale, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Audriņi parish, Bērzgale parish, Čornaja parish, Dricāni parish, Feimaņi parish, Gaigalava parish, Griškāni parish, Ilzeskalns parish, Kantinieki parish, Kaunata parish, Lendži parish, Lūznava parish, Mākoņkalns parish, Malta parish, Nagļi parish, Nautrēni parish, Ozolaine parish, Ozolmuiža parish, Puša parish, Rikava parish, Sakstagals parish, Silmala parish, Stoļerova parish, Strūžāni parish and Vērēmi parish, town Viļāni. Ratlines (World War II Aftermath)
Ratlines (german: Rattenlinien) were a system of escape routes for Nazis and other fascists fleeing Europe in the aftermath of World War II. These escape routes mainly led toward havens in Latin America, particularly Argentina, though also Paraguay, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador and Bolivia, as well as the United States, Spain and Switzerland. There were two primary routes: the first went from Germany to Spain, then Argentina; the second from Germany to Rome to Genoa, then South America. The two routes developed independently but eventually came together. The ratlines were supported by some controversial clergy of the Catholic Church, and later used by the United States Intelligence officers. Rēzekne (, ; German: ''Rositten'') is a state city in the Rēzekne River valley in Latgale region of eastern Latvia. VAS Latvijas Pasts ( en, Latvian Post) is the main state-owned postal service provider in Latvia headquartered in Riga. It was founded on 2 January 1992, following shortly after the restoration of independence of the country. History Latvia Post was founded on 2 January 1992 as a state-owned company, prior to which multiple postal companies had already existed in the territory. On 1 November 2004, Latvia Post was re-registered simply as a state joint-stock company instead of having the status of a nonprofit organization state stock company.
